Walking Dead: Writers of all the episodes with our ratings Link to this post

    Hi Walking Dead Fans!

After rating these shows for a few years now, have you ever wondered who were the writers that wrote those episodes we love best?

This was a fun thing to do and didn't take too much time. I like this also because you can seek out their writing in other shows to see if they hold up. Perhaps you can get turned onto another TV show altogether through this.

This list covers all the episodes through the end of Season 4.

    Enjoy!

BTW: What's your favorite episode and why?

Mine is still TS-19. It gave our survivors an opportunity to reembrace civilization and then it was ripped away from them in less than two days. It probably has the fewest number of zombies in it as well. It also had the love triangle with Lori, Shane and Rick. I loved Jenner's mini arc as well.

If you rate all the writers by using show ratings and average them all, here's what comes up: (without including "A"):

(As Robin has noted some folks were brought in for one episode which may skew these results a bit. These indicated with a *. Season enders also can distort the ratings as well.)

    Frank Darabont   71
    David Leslie Johnson   69
    Adam Fierro   69* ("TS-19")
Sang Kyu Kim   68* ("Killer Within")
Frank Renzulli   67* ("When the Dead Come Knocking")
    Scott Gimple   67
    Robert Kirkman    66
    Seth Hoffman   65
Jack LoGiudice   65* ("Tell It to the Frogs")
Charles H. Eglee   65* ("Tell It to the Frogs")
    Matt Negrete   63
    Angela Kang   63
    Channing Powell   61
    Nichole Beattie   60
    Glen Mazzara   60
    Evan T. Reilly   57
Ryan C. Coleman   53* ("Arrow on the Doorpost")
    Curtis Gwinn   52

The 7 most frequently used writers give us the following in terms of the writing:

    Frank Darabont at the top
Robert Kirkman and Scott Gimple in the middle
    Angela Kang
Glen Mazzara and Nichole Beattie near the bottom
Evan T. Reilly at the bottom

    Fantastic work

The obvious problem with judging writers by their episodes is that some writers will be given more interesting stories to tell. In particular the season finales tend to be dramatic and highly rated...

Thanks! I really loved doing this because I had a burning curiosity about who wrote what we all liked.

However, you raise a great point. Season enders can win the ratings wars by the virtue of what they provide; resolution and closure and fantastic moments that have been building.

Some of the comments I have seen left for S4E13 reflect other peoples opinions at judging the overall season.

I cannot wait to see after the end of this season how it faired compared to the others.

I will post an update to this right before your closer podcast to see how that looks.

    Cheers!

The good news is that David Goyer will be directing episode 15 with Michelle MacLaren directing the finale

    Wow!

The man behind Blade and the more recent Batman movies!

It should be a very interesting episode story wise.

I am speculating that Judith will meet Rick and Carl during this episode.

Terminus I think will be in 16.

Only three more and then sadness until October!

    Bad and good news.
David Goyer seems to have dropped off the radar as director of episode 15 even though it was widely reported, with quotes from the man himself, last year.
Greg Nicotero is behind the camera instead who has grown superbly in the role.

I thought the direction was fine with 15, however the writing on 15 was sub par. I think it was one of the worst episodes I have scene in a long time. I did an analysis of just the Train Tunnel scene and how small changes in dialog could have made a huge difference here:
Walking Dead: The Train Tunnel Scene (deconstructed): http://www.thetvcritic.org/forums/other-tv-shows/show/172

Whenever I watch a show that can fix major problems with small revisions in the writing and it doesn't, I think of this as bad television.
