Episode 3 - Midnight Towboy

Review

Synopsis: Homer is out looking for milk in Guidopolis when his car gets towed. He is so impressed by Louie’s towing lifestyle that he becomes one. He irritates the people of Springfield so much that they set him up to betray Louie who traps him in his basement. Meanwhile Marge is worried that Maggie is too clingy. She calls in help from C.R.I.E. who help Maggie become more independent. Maggie eventually tracks down Homer and rescues him.

The Good: Not a lot. A few jokes will make you smile, like Homer being a silhouette model and seeing Skinner riding to work on a desk chair. Homer has a good line when he says “Wow, you make people miserable and there’s nothing they can do about it. Just like God.”

The Bad: The first three episodes of season nineteen have all been very similar. Homer gets a new job or hobby, then in the final third of the episode some kind of “dramatic” sequence occurs which wraps things up.

Having Maggie rescue Homer is of course stupid. I know it’s only a cartoon but having a baby use adult intelligence just does nothing for the show. Are there really any Maggie fans out there that will be happy to see this? All this does is make viewers consciously or not disregard the story as nonsense. When that happens you disconnect from any plausibility in the story and that plausibility is often what can really hook you into a joke and make you laugh.

Best Joke: Bart and Milhouse are searching for swearwords in the Bible so that they will be allowed to use them. So far they have found “ass”, “hell”, “damn”, “Leviticus” and “whore.” Milhouse comments that he doesn’t think Leviticus is a swear word. To which Bart retorts “Shut the hell up you damn ass whore.”

The Bottom Line: Maggie behaving like an adult is a bad idea. This episode is a bad idea.
