Episode 21 - Moe Letter Blues

11 May 2010

Review

Synopsis: Moe narrates the story of how three marriages are in trouble. He leaves a note with Apu, Homer and Reverend Lovejoy claiming he will run away with one of their wives. Each man racks his brain for how they might have messed things up.

The Good: Having Moe narrate and having Apu and Reverend Lovejoy heavily involved in a Homer story were nice changes of pace. The mystery of what was really going on with Moe and their wives was a decent hook to ensure you kept watching even on the million-to-one chance that the show might spring a big surprise.

Moe narrating allowed for some good jokes like when he sees Marge in a towel and follows up with a most un-narrator like "What the hell was I talking about?" The odd silly line was fun too such as Moe's note having a specific Moe water mark. Or Homer losing a poll which the ship Captain breezily claims was used to hook the dock (so naturally the boat smashes into the dock). Moe finished on a nice gag too saying even his inflatable girlfriend left him "I should not have used helium."

The Bad: Of course the relationships are all fixed with no particular change in behaviour and Moe's part in it was contrived. Along the way the various flashbacks were passable but nothing we haven't seen many times before.

Best Joke: In a nice riff on arranged marriages Mandula says to Apu "What my grandfather saw in your grandfather I will never know."

The Bottom Line: Passably entertaining if unoriginal fluff.
