King Russell Edgington delivers some news (True Blood 309)

Hey everyone,

As you probably know, there are some shows I write full reviews for and some I don't. Some of the shows I do write full reviews for I am stuck with and probably don't need the full treatment anymore (Family Guy, Entourage). Many shows exist which I would like to write full reviews of but for various reasons I can not (Breaking Bad, Dexter, Community etc).

One day I would love to be able to write full reviews of everything I watch but until then I am going to continue with this blend of reviews. But I have decided not to stick the smaller reviews in the Blog section anymore, instead I am creating a section called "Other Reviews" where each episode will get its own page. This means that the reviews will appear in the main feed and should create several advantages for all of us.

It means I will be able to start giving scores out of 100. Though don't take them too seriously as without a full review of the whole show I will be prone to make more misjudgements. It will allow you to more easily comment on the episodes you are interested in which will help me understand what you are watching. If the comments get really interesting then I may be able to put them into podcasts as I do with other shows.

It also means I will be able to put up a picture from that episode to accompany the review which should be fun (as the above example amply demonstrates).

So the blog section will go back to being a place for me or you to write about and discuss more general things about TV.

I hope you enjoy.

  • Hi Mike, it's lovely to hear from you. I understand your TV situation. I don't think many TV shows can grip the imagination the way Lost did. You mention some very good shows you've still to catch up on but I think the kind of bond many of us experienced with Lost maybe a once-a-decade experience.

Yeah I felt very grey about Boardwalk Empire. It was very well executed but never grabbed my emotions. Having said that it took Breaking Bad one season, Mad Men three seasons and the Wire two to grab me but they all did eventually.

I was a HUGE Scrubs fan when season one aired. I still think Season One of Scrubs is about the best comedy series I have seen since Friends\Frasier ended\declined.

I also believe that the show declined from season two onwards. I had planned to fill in the back catalogue of all the shows on my homepage. However it seems sensible for now to prioritise all the shows still running. Which sadly means it maybe a long time before I ever get there.

Bones joins Fringe as a show I always wondered about watching but as the seasons ticked over it felt futile to begin reviewing it. It's the same reason I didn't review Battlestar Galactica, it was so far into its run that I felt I would be wasting my time. Sadly time remains a factor and I am unlikely to get to Bones. As you point out I may well not get on with the precedural aspects of it.

Kind readers have pointed me toward key episodes of Fringe so that if I have the time I can jump to the important moments. If you wanted to do the same for Bones I would be very indebted to you but as ever, I might not get there.

I hope a show comes on sometime that inspires you to want to comment. Take care :-)

  • Howdy Robin!

Old friend; New Year! Hope everything is well. Here's a llittle update on my viewing since the end of Lost, followed by a couple series review suggestions (based not on any assertion about merit, but just simply on what shows you could write about that I could reconnect here with you about, which Id love to do):

So I've been checking in, but unfortunately for the most part our interests haven't lined up on a show. That's mainly because post-Lost my TV watching is far less intense than it was. I'm an avid Mad Men fan, but to be honest the show kind of exhausted and disillusioned me this season (not to say it didn't remain great), so I just don't have much to say about it now. I just about agreed with everything you wrote about Boardwalk Empire, and the fact that I wasn't moved to even try to write up why it grabbed me just a little more than it did you shows that it must have been a very little indeed. I still have a close viewing on the Wire on my to do list, and I'm going to start Breaking Bad from the beginning on DVD this year. But I definitely have nothing close to Lost in terms of my investment of time or emotion at this time. (And that's actually probably for the good.)

But there are two shows that I would love to participate in discussions or reviews of here. I mention the first because it is one I see you have given partial treatment to: Scrubs. I'm aware that the ABC seasons are or were available online and the NBC seasons not, so I understand why you've reviewed them. I'm sure you've been told if you don;t know first hand that those seasons are way past the show's prime. i think it was really special in its heyday, and I'd love to revisit the show if you ever find yourself with extra time.

The other show I think would lend itself somewhat well to your system would be Bones. It's nominally a procedural, but it has a lot of longer-term plot and character dev. (though it drops out for spells) as well, especially in the early seasons. In some ways I think it's a little Buffy-esque in its quirkiness (also its Boreanaz-ness). My girlfriend and I discovered it on a repeat marathon on New Years Day 2009, and have been avid fans ever since - we own every season now. (Though she's been unhappy with the story trend of late; such is the lot of the hard core 'shipper.)

Anyway, just wanted to check in. I know you have a pretty rigid logic for how you decide on your shows to review, and I'll be reading along no matter what. But if you ever want to, I'll be excited to undertake a close look at either of these shows I've mentioned.

Happy New Year, best to TheTVCritic.org and all its readers!

    Cheers,
    Mike Drew
