The Wire Link to this post

Have you ever watched The Wire? If so what are your thoughts on it? I read you wouldn't review procedural shows, but will you one day review The Wire? It's definitely not your standard procedural show and is mostly about the characters.

Please no spoilers here, as I am only up to season 4 now.

    Hey,

I have never seen The Wire

I have heard absolute rave reviews from TV critics who I respect and so it is something I would like to watch if I ever get the time. Obviously it's a big commitment of time as you are probably finding.

I don't know how I would get on with it. I did see an episode or two of the Shield but didn't feel drawn to it. And I have mixed feelings about Mad Men and the West Wing. So I know I don't always feel the same way all the major critics seem to.

What would you say about The Wire? Is it different to any other show you have seen?

It's definitely very different from the usual procedural shows. I've never seen The Shield but The Wire takes it's time developing it's characters and the plot which means it's not that fast moving (but always interesting). It always pays off in the end though. It's also very realistic.
You can't just jump in an episode, the plot will be too hard to follow, just like with Lost. If you watch it you should at least watch one full season (only 13 episodes) to see if you like it.

The Wire is slow burning. There's rarely any action, suspense, or "twists." The strongest part of The Wire, besides the acting, is the characters and how real to life the writing is. Unlike Heroes, The Wire does an amazing job of having the characters face consequences for their actions. You always mention TV being an art form, The Wire is probably one of the very few shows that can support that.

I too am on the 4th season, and it sometimes feel like a chore. When I first caught 24 and Supernatural on DVD I watched a season every two days. The Wire has taken me close to a year. It'll definitely be a monumental task and time consuming to review a show such as The Wire. Best of luck if you chose to.

Also, each season has a self-contained story (with exception of seasons 1 & 3 - they go together.) Still, the show has to be watched from the beginning because characters' actions carry on through the seasons.

Hmm I've had no difficulty watching it. Started about 3 weeks ago.

eh, it could also be because I have 30 other shows on my plate then. The Wire is in the middle for me in terms of priority.

    How do you prioritise shows?

Obviously I have a need to catch up and live up to the TV critic name sometimes. But often when I have a bunch of shows to watch I will inevitably be drawn to the one I like the most.

It's funny how I react emotionally to chosing which show to watch sometimes. I always start a new episode of How I Met Your Mother with the hope that I will really like it despite critically having no faith in it. Where as I sometimes dread watching the Simpsons, partly because of seeing a once great show deteriorate...

The Wire is absolutely one of my favorite shows of all time.

    The depth is AMAZING.

I've never been into law enforcement procedurals, but The Wire is way above and beyond the run of the mill cop show. Heck I think it is above and beyond most TV shows period.

Great acting. Great story. Great continuity. And rarely has there been a show that thrusts you into the reality of these worlds. Detectives that have paperwork and unpaid overtime. Bright eyed politicians who quickly find out you have to compromise all of your idealistic beliefs in order to even have a shot at being elected. Inner city gang members who are intelligent and systematic business men. The reality of what education systems can be like.

An amazing, amazing show. I would recommend it highly to any and everyone.

HBO has a history of some amazing shows: The Wire, Carnivale, Six Feet Under, etc.
