Episode 17 - Brian and Stewie
3 May 2010
Synopsis: The 150th episode of Family Guy. Brian and Stewie get locked in a bank vault together. Then they air a few musical numbers.
The Good: I suppose they are each other's best friend at this point. That slither of goodness will be enough for some.
Flashback ratio (good-medium-bad): N\A
The Bad: Otherwise this is Family Guy at its self indulgent worst. This felt like watching Seth Macfarlane masturbate for an hour. Stewie and Brian aren't real characters. They don't have real constitutions anymore. Family Guy has consistently sold off every inch of reality in the show for the sake of every random cheap laugh that it can lay its hands on. So to sit through the two of them having an in depth conversation just isn't entertaining. There is no tension or enjoyable interplay; they have both been deeply changeable joke props for too long.
Seeing them argue over Brian eating Stewie's poo was pretty gross. But even if you love your gross out humour the joke dragged on and on forever as did each of the shifts in conversation topic. Even when drunk it's difficult to believe Brian would pierce Stewie's ear so recklessly but again what do you expect from characters with no consistency? The impossible bullet bouncing on and on and on made no sense either.
The bottom line is that this isn't comedy. To have two characters venting at one another is a sit com staple from shows with real humans who have real personalities. There is barely a joke here as two bizarre creations go through various annoying or unpleasant issues.
Beyond the self indulgent story we have Family Guy's greatest time wasting device, musical numbers. Very rarely are these ever good songs or contain any good jokes and none of these is worth watching twice.
Best Joke: After Brian starts to lick his ass clean...yep... Stewie says in a serious tone "Brian you rock, thanks so much for doing this."
The Bottom Line: Utterly self indulgent and pointless.
