Episode 19 - TOW Eddie Won't Go
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Chandler tells Eddie to move out but he won’t and his behaviour becomes more erratic. The girls are reading a book about female empowerment which causes them to fall out. After he was fired from Days of Our Lives Joey has to move out of his apartment and return the expensive things he had bought.
The Good: Adam Goldberg brings Eddie to glorious, hilarious life in his scenes and his dehydrating fruit and psychotic flights of fancy are very funny. He is an ideal foil for Chandler who gets funnier the more exasperated he becomes. Ross and Joey are excellent in their roles, naturally falling into the sensible and silly roles that Joey’s reckless spending throws up. The girls are fun in their story, getting wrapped up in the book and then turning on each other.
The Bad: But as fun and entertaining as this is, there are some major weaknesses. Eddie’s crazy behaviour is again treated as annoying and dangerous but not sympathetic. Surely you would call authorities and worry about this man’s health? It again seems odd that Eddie could have had a girlfriend and what appeared to be a normal life when he had such pronounced psychological problems. The girls’ story doesn’t go anywhere interesting. They don’t seem to learn any real insights into their lives and the plot comes across as a way to make cheap jokes. The writers seem to be doing such a good job with the humour that they are a little careless here with the characterisation.
Best Line: (C) “Get out, get out, get out, get out, get out, get out, get out.” (Eddie) “What?” (C) “You move out. Take your fruit, your stupid small fruit and get out!” (E) “You want me to move out?” (C) “Uh huh!” (E) “I uh, I gotta tell you man, that’s kind of out of the blue, don’t you think?” (C) “This is not out of the blue. This is smack dab in the middle of the blue!”
Best Friend: Chandler
