Episode 7 - TOW Ross Finds Out
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Chandler has put on a little weight and Monica offers to help him lose it. Phoebe is dating a guy who won’t sleep with her. Ross is buying a cat with Julie and Rachel goes on a date with a friend of Monica’s. On the date she gets drunk and calls Ross to say that she is over him.
The Good: The Chandler-Monica and Phoebe stories are essentially filler for the main Ross and Rachel story. Both plots have an interesting moral subtext. The Phoebe story is fun but as Joey says, she gets screwed over in the end. Where as Chandler gets to be quite evil by playing on Monica’s insecurities to avoid exercise. Both stories show a nice more rounded side to their characters. Again mirroring the real world where people are often selfish and dishonest. The Ross and Rachel stuff is great as they have their first kiss and both her when drunk and him freaking out are very entertaining. Overall this episode shows a lot of faults in the characters which is nice, it makes them seem more real. It also shows that when character moments take over, a sit com can be more than cheap jokes. The Ross and Rachel confrontation and kiss isn’t comic at all, but it is fantastic television.
The Bad: It’s difficult to see the point of the Phoebe story except to show that she can be manipulated. The sub plots are too weak to make this episode one of the greats.
Best Line: (P) “He’s really interesting and he’s really sweet and why won’t he give it up?” (J) “Well maybe he drives his car on the other side of the road if you know what I mean?” (P) “No what do you mean? He’s not British.”
Best Friend: Rachel
