Episode 7 - TOW Chandler Crosses The Line
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Chandler and Kathy are left alone and kiss. Ross starts playing keyboards to the group but is oblivious to how bad he is.
The Good: This is an episode of two very different stories. Kathy and Chandler are excellent, showing a real chemistry and affection for each other. Chandler’s desperation and guilt come across well and you really sympathise with Joey who, despite his treatment of women, has been betrayed. There are also the trademark Chandler one-liners along the way.
The Bad: The other story is stupidity itself. This episode is only a series after Friends best work and yet the producers and writers have lost the plot with this story. Ross is meant to be a serious, normal person but here he plays a few sound effects on his keyboard and is completely oblivious to his own friends’ reactions. Those friends are unkind to him by letting him play at Central Perk and humiliating himself in public. Worse still is kooky Phoebe, who loves the music. Even if that was a plausible or funny idea, the girls admit that they think Phoebe sucks as well. This makes no sense. If Phoebe really was terrible, then why would the others have let her humiliate herself on stage for years? And not only they but members of the public have been shown in other episodes enjoying her music. It was always evident that Phoebe was an unusual musician but to admit that she sucks undercuts the credibility of the show. This is some very thoughtless writing.
Best Line: (Kathy) “You have really great hair.” (C) “Well thanks. I grow it myself.”
Best Friend: Chandler
