Episode 2 - TOW All The Kissing
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Phoebe gives birth to the triplets. She wants to keep one but realises she can’t. Monica and Chandler row when Rachel gets a double date for her and Monica. Meanwhile Joey discovers that he has kidney stones.
The Good: Although it is a bizarre choice of story, the doctor who is obsessed with the Fonz provides some nice jokes. As does Frank whose enthusiasm is entertaining. There are some other nice jokes and there is nothing wrong with the Joey kidney stones plot or Phoebe saying bye to the babies but there is a lack of emotional resonance to the whole episode.
The Bad: This is because the characters are badly written. Understandably Phoebe is feeling separation anxiety about losing the babies, but to ask if she can keep one is a stupid story. It is typical of the writers trying to get a laugh out of a serious story and thus ruining it. Phoebe looks like a psycho for believing she can keep one. This nullifies most of the “touching” moments later on. Similarly Chandler is obviously lying when he says he is cool with Monica dating a nurse and she stupidly takes him seriously and he even more stupidly then acts childish for the rest of the episode. It just doesn’t seem real and you just wait for the happy ending after some bad acting and writing make this a lame duck plot. Considering how good an episode Ben’s birth was in series one, this is a good comparison to show how much things have slipped in quality since then.
Best Line: (Ra to M convincing her to go on a double date with two male nurses) “Ok you’re coming with me and I also told them that if we’re still here when they get off that we’ll go down to the cafeteria and get some jello with them.” (J) “Yep – there’s always room for jello!” (Ra) “Joey how do you make that dirty?” (J) “Oh it’s easy, I can do it with anything. Watch uh…grandma’s chicken salad!”
Best Friend: Phoebe
