Episode 19 - TOW Ross Can't Flirt

Synopsis: The guys and Joey’s grandmother gather to watch an episode of Law and Order starring Joey. Monica and Chandler are going out to dinner for their anniversary and Monica has lost the earrings he gave her. Ross tries to prove he can flirt with a pizza delivery girl.
The Good: These episodes with all the friends together tend to be better than an average episode and this is no different. Some really good character moments come out of this. Monica forgiving Phoebe but condemning Rachel is spot on as is Chandler’s assertion that girls’ flirting is different than when a guy does it. Those reactions fit the characters traits and reflect real world attitudes. Despite the humiliation he is put through Ross is still the comedy highlight of the episode and to me there is nothing truer or funnier than him asking what the delivery girls name is as he is about to open the door.
The Bad: The season 1 and 2 Ross would never have been all cocky about his flirting ability (see 114) and certainly wouldn’t have gone on and on as he does here. You could argue that that is character development but it isn’t. It is just the writers selling him out for a cheap joke. I guess Joey’s grandma would be dumb to have produced Joey but still the conclusion to that story is as unrealistic as it gets. Phoebe unknowingly speaks Italian? Brilliant.
Best Line: (C) “Yes it does bother me and I think it would bother a lot of other people. Rachel, when you were going out with Ross did it bother you when he flirted with other women?
(Ra) “Uh no, no, it bothered me when he slept with other women.”
