Episode 1 - TOW Monica Gets a Roomate

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Rachel leaves her own wedding and seeks out her high school friend Monica for help. Monica goes out on a date with Paul from the restaurant where she works. Meanwhile Ross is struggling to get over his divorce from his ex-wife who he didn’t know was a lesbian.

The Good: As a first episode this is superb. The dialogue is witty and the characters are well defined from the start. Joey and Phoebe both stand out as funny and interesting and the silly aspects of their characters fit seamlessly into the real sounding dialogue. Chandler and Ross both come across as strong, clearly defined, funny characters. Rachel is excellent as the spoilt girl looking to change her life and Monica, at this stage is the leading lady and she looks the part. The writers manage to introduce the characters and have multiple stories run throughout the show, both Monica’s date and the contrast between Ross and Rachel starting their new lives.

The Bad: It’s a good thing Monica didn’t already have a room mate, isn’t it?

Best Line: (Ra) “Guess what?”
(Ro) “You got a job?”
(Ra) “Are you kidding? I’m trained for nothing! I was laughed out of twelve interviews today.”
(C) “And yet you’re surprisingly upbeat.”
(Ra) “Well you would be too if you’d found John and David boots on sale 50% off.”
(C) “Oh how well you know me.”

Best Friend: Ross
