Episode 11 - TOW Mrs. Bing
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Nora Bing, Chandler’s mother and best-selling erotic novel author comes to town. Ross kisses her when drunk forcing Chandler to confront her about her behaviour. Rachel is inspired to write her own erotic novel. Meanwhile Phoebe and Monica care for a guy they accidentally put into a coma.
The Good: The Chandler and his mum story is brilliantly crafted. While Ross kissing her pushes the plot along, it is not the point of the story, it leads to Chandler confronting her about her behaviour. It is sensible and intelligent writing. Instead of making jokes at Ross’ expense, the focus is on Chandler and his back-story. In the meantime we are treated to lots of good jokes, the highlight of which is Ross and Joey pretending they were going to play racket ball. Joey is really funny and well characterised as he tries to prove to Ross that his mother is just as attractive. Meanwhile Phoebe and Monica are well drawn as well, with a very clever plot. At first it seems a silly idea that they cause a guy to get run over. But by having a good looking guy in a coma we see all their insecurities and desires transferred onto him. At first they fantasise about what they want from a man and then that slowly turns to jealousy and suspicion that the other one might steal him away. Finally they have a go at the guy when he wakes up, despite the fact that he has no idea what has been going on. A very good character episode which shines a light on the characters flaws as well as their strengths and gives plenty to laugh at along the way.
The Bad: How did Monica and Phoebe get access to a patient they weren’t related to? It’s a shame we never see Chandler’s relationship with his mother addressed again in this way. We don’t see too much here and there is clearly more to learn.
Best Line: (C) “What are you guys doing out here?” (Ro) “Well Joey and I had discussed getting in an early morning racket ball game. But um apparently, somebody overslept.” (J) “Yeah well you don’t have your racket.” (Ro) “No, no I don’t because it’s being restrung. Somebody was supposed to bring me one.” (J) “Yeah, well you didn’t call and leave your grip size.”
Best Friend: Ross
