Episode 7 - TOW The Blackout

29 March 2012

Synopsis: New York suffers a black out. Chandler is trapped in an ATM vestibule with a model while the other friends congregate at Monica’s. Ross tries to ask out Rachel but a cat and its owner Paulo get in the way.

The Good: There is a tremendous amount to enjoy here, it’s an excellent episode. The blackout setting is used to full effect to set up both stories. Chandler is the star, perfecting the geeky guy trying to attract the hot girl routine. Meanwhile both Ross and Rachel are believable and funny in their roles. Paulo is perfectly cast as the answer to Rachel’s search for passion. Joey and Phoebe are both funny in their support roles and Monica is fine. The skill of the writing is to show the friends having normal conversations which feed the plots without seeming at all forced.

The Bad: This episode is sometimes remembered as an absolute classic but it is not quite at that level. The Chandler plot is a lot of fun but it never threatens a belly laugh. Similarly the Rachel-Paulo story is paced perfectly but doesn’t ever reach greatness, it’s “just” predictable and enjoyable. Again none of these points are real criticism, more qualifying why this episode is not one of the very best.

Best Line:
(Jill Goodacre) “Would you like to call somebody?”
(C – in his mind) “Yeah, about three hundred guys I went to high school with.”

Best Friend: Chandler
