Episode 5 - TOW The East German Laundry Detergent
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Joey recruits Monica to help him win an ex-girlfriend back. Chandler and Phoebe break up with their partners on the same night and Ross helps Rachel do her laundry for the first time.
The Good: This is probably the best episode that Friends ever created where the six characters naturally pair off for their plots. By pairing the characters and setting the whole show on one Saturday night there is a really logical, well paced feel to this episode. A really happy vibe flows from these stories; I find it difficult not to feel uplifted by watching this! All three plots have happy endings and each story has a chirpy, positive after taste. Joey and Monica are fine in their story but the real stars are Chandler and Ross ably supported by the girls. Chandler is a ball of relentless energy as he stumbles around trying to break up with the wonderful Janice. She is all too familiar to anyone who knows someone pleasant but irritating. Phoebe is ideal as his completely oblivious accomplice, their scenes are really funny. As are Ross and Rachel’s – again the writers do a good job showing how they are both starting a new life and also hinting at how they would make a good couple. Rachel is charming and Ross is sweet and funny. This is Friends version of an upbeat pop song - catchy, entertaining and puts a smile on your face.
The Bad: Monica helps Joey break up a couple. That seems a little immoral for her, especially as in most episodes she looks down on Joey’s attitude toward women.
Best Line: (C) “Where are they, where are they?” (P) “This is nice we never do anything just the two of us.” (C) “That’s great. Maybe tomorrow we can rent a car and run over some puppies.” (P) “Oooh I don’t wanna do that.”
Best Friend: Chandler
