Episode 12 - TOW Joey Dates Rachel

20 January 2009

Synopsis: Rachel is contemplating life without dating now that the baby is on the way, so Joey takes her out on a date. Phoebe buys a Ms Pac-Man arcade machine for Monica and Chandler and Ross has to race across town three times a week to teach a graduate class which is too far away to get to.

The Good: Joey and Rachel in a romance story is a tough sell. We’ve seen Joey be so stupid and mean to women it’s difficult to imagine Rachel falling for him. However the writers and actors do a very commendable job here showing Joey fall for her. Their date is really nicely handled and they find several clever ways for them to be funny and establish their common ground at the same time. The Ms Pac-Man plot is very basic but at least they crack the odd joke. Ross makes his plot funny by his facial expressions and relentless pursuit of a class he wants to teach but can’t reach.

The Bad: Ross’ story though suffers a little by the fact that a stage microphone is visible in most of the classroom shots. It breaks the mood a bit. Also, why doesn’t Ross take off his skates to teach the class?

Best Line: (Ra) “Alright now don’t judge me. I normally wait till my date leaves but you live here. I’m ripping into the swan.”
(J) “Ok well then you don’t judge me, I’m gonna suck on the cellophane from the brownie I had before.”

Best Friend: Joey
