Episode 5 - TOW Rachel's Date

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Phoebe starts dating a very sweet guy from Monica’s restaurant. However she wants to end things with him just as Monica wants to fire him. They both want to avoid being the bad guy. Rachel goes out with an actor from Days of Our Lives and it makes Ross feel confused about what the future will be with them and the baby. Meanwhile Chandler tries to avoid working with a guy who has called him Toby for the last five years and ends up costing him a promotion.

The Good: The actor chosen to play the sweet guy does a good job otherwise that story could have been even worse. Ross talking about wanting to have a proper family and explaining how not being with Ben feels is good character depth stuff. The Chandler plot almost redeems itself with the last scene where he helps Bob trash his own office. This only works so well because it has been established for so long that he doesn’t care about his job.

The Bad: Who cares about Monica and Phoebe? Their plot is so thin it is difficult to even pay attention to their dilemma with the sweet guy. You know he will be gone by the end of the episode and there will be no consequences and sadly no laughs. Ross thinking about the future is fine but it doesn’t really go anywhere and he and Rachel will have many more of these “moments” before any actual plot developments happen. Chandler telling his boss he shouldn’t promote a guy because it would be embarrassing to admit he isn’t called Toby is really dumb. It makes Chandler look like a coward and really unkind for meddling in someone’s career for such a petty reason.

Best Line: (J) “Hey.”
(Ra) “Hi.”
(J) “Uh you know Cash really liked you the other day. He said he thought you were charming.”
(Ra) “Oh! I thought I was a complete idiot!”
(J) “Hey I’m with you.”

Best Friend: Ross
