Episode 9 - TOW The Rumor

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Ross’ old high school friend Will (Brad Pitt) comes for thanksgiving dinner. He still hates Rachel for how she treated him in high school and tells her how Ross used to hate her as well. Joey convinces Monica that he will finish all of the turkey she has to cook even though only three of the friends will eat it.

The Good: Seeing Brad Pitt is a novelty and the audience clearly love the fact that he has to pretend to hate his real life wife Rachel. Joey is a lot of fun trying to eat a whole turkey and Ross has his moments reminiscing about good and bad high school moments. If you like stupid episodes full of silly punch lines then this is a laugh.

The Bad: However this stretches the credibility of the show. The knowledge of Pitt’s real life relationship with the friends overshadows the story they try to present. In many ways he is too big a star to appear on the show. He is ok in his role but instead of focussing on the characterisation of how Rachel has become a better person the writers prefer to make stupid jokes about the rumour he started. They then pick on Ross for no apparent reason making him a romancer of the elderly. Add that to him apparently having slept with his cleaning lady in college (704) and Ross’ character is further degraded for the sake of cheap laughs. Phoebe makes jokes which are really over the top about her lust for Pitt. Also, why couldn’t Monica just make the turkey for Joey and enjoy the leftovers later?

Best Line: (Ra) “Monica how come you never told me this?”
(M) “I thought it might be true. And I was afraid that you were gonna cry and then show it to me.”
(Ra) “Joey stop staring, there’s nothing there it’s not true.”
(J) “I’m afraid I’m gonna need proof.”
