Episode 9 - TOW Rachel's Phone Number

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Rachel goes out with Phoebe for the night and gives her number to a guy. But she doesn’t want Ross to know about it, so she asks Mike to intercept Ross’ phone calls. Meanwhile Chandler lies to Joey to spare his feelings and he ends up thinking Monica is having an affair.

The Good: Ross does his best with this one and his facial expressions are always good. The moment he and Rachel share is nice but is also indicative that the writers don’t really know where they are going with their story.

The Bad: The writers can’t explain Ross and Rachel’s feelings for each other because they don’t know what they are. The scenes with Ross and Mike not thinking of anything to say are ok. It’s an idea that should be funnier than it is. There is no reason they shouldn’t be capable of small talk so their scenes feel contrived. Joey’s stupidity is put on the rack here and tortured by him not being able to figure out what is going on with Monica and Chandler. It’s sad to watch because we are being patronised by his stupidity.

Best Line: (J) [Sniffing] “Why do I smell men’s cologne?”
(M) “I think that’s you.”
(J) “Oh yeah, I rubbed a magazine on myself earlier.”

Best Friend: Ross
