Episode 14 - TOW The Blind Dates

20 January 2009

Synopsis: Phoebe and Joey believe that Ross and Rachel should be together again. So they set them both up on terrible blind dates to try and force them together. Monica and Chandler baby-sit Emma but need to have sex because it is the last day Monica is ovulating.

The Good: The plan from Phoebe and Joey is a nice story but it is not very enjoyably executed. Joey is the funniest here but it doesn’t take a huge effort to achieve that. Chandler is ok in his role but he is about a tenth as funny as he once was. To be fair there are quite a few silly one-liners that work well.

The Bad: Ross getting stood up is ok but they don’t make much of it. Meanwhile it’s just painfully bad television watching Rachel on her date. It’s such a waste of Jon Lovitz to have him play the complete loser and there is not an inch of subtlety to his interaction with Rachel. It’s as if someone brainstormed for a list of things that could be wrong with a guy and then just decided to use them all. That really isn’t funny as it’s not the least bit realistic and surely causes more pity than laughter. Monica should know better than to leave a baby unattended like that, it doesn’t suit her character to have gone off to have sex.

Best Line: (P) “You know what, maybe once they start dating and they see what’s out there, they’ll realise how good they are for each other.”
(J) “Yeah because it is slim pickings. I had this date last night. Yuck! But we should probably keep it down she’s still in the bedroom.”

Best Friend: Joey
