Episode 16 - TOW The Boob Job

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Chandler and Monica are short on money. They both go to Joey for help and he has to lie to Chandler to cover Monica’s tracks. So he tells him that she is having a boob job. Phoebe and Mike agree to move in together but he says he could never get married again. Rachel baby proofs the apartment which causes Joey problems.

The Good: Joey and the baby proofing is harmless slapstick. Throughout the odd joke is passable, such as when the friends carry the couch into the apartment.

The Bad: I believe the main problem with all stories relating to Mike are that he is unconvincing as a character. He is not well serviced by the writers and it is never established what his personality is. He doesn’t come across as especially warm or likeable either. Pairing him with the inconsistent Phoebe makes them a difficult couple to either believe in or care about. Here Phoebe’s confrontation with him about marriage could have been a sad moment but it doesn’t have much effect. Chandler believing that Monica might have a boob job without talking to him is very unrealistic. Why doesn’t he just go and ask her directly? How bad is their relationship supposed to be? It is very poor writing that can’t think of a more interesting and creative way to be funny.

Best Line: (M) “I thought it was something we both wanted?”
(C) “Alright if it means that much to you I might be able to get on board with the big boobs, but the giant ass and the big clown feet?”

Best Friend: Joey
