Episode 22 - TOW The Donor

20 January 2009

Synopsis: Chandler and Monica consider their options of having a baby. With sperm donors a possibility Chandler brings home a guy from his office who he thinks would be good. Ross has to interview for the chance to become a key note speaker at a conference and his interviewer falls asleep. Phoebe runs into David and Rachel takes Charlie shopping while hiding her feelings for Joey.

The Good: Ross’ plot is ok. I suppose people do fall asleep in meetings though one-on-one seems unlikely. Pretending he had got the speech gig was a clever way to end that scene. Joey is fun in his brief moments in the show and Rachel has some good lines. David’s return is a nice moment as is Monica telling Chandler she doesn’t want to have a child with someone else.

The Bad: Monica and Chandler’s inappropriate questions would just never happen in real life. Even though they occasionally make you smile it is just too unrealistic to be enjoyable. Chandler is inconsistent here; he is very enthusiastic about Zach even making deeply self-deprecating remarks and then says he didn’t want to do it all along. It is either poor acting to not give a hint of doubt or just bad writing. Either way it is a clunky switch from obvious joke scenes to serious ones. Similarly Charlie doesn’t come across well as she has to play dumb to Rachel’s increasingly transparent hostility. Throughout the episode the feeling remains that the writers have lost touch with reality and the actors are suffering having to convince us of obviously poorly thought out dialogue.

Best Line: (Doctor) “Even though your chances of conceiving through natural means aren’t great, you never know. So keep having sex on a regular basis.”
(C) “Oh damnit!”

Best Friend: Chandler
