Episode 18 - TOW The Lottery

20 January 2009

Synopsis: The whole gang buy lottery tickets while Chandler waits to hear if he has got an internship.

The Good: I always felt that more Friends episodes should have been done like this. With all six friends together there are far fewer dull moments and stupid punch lines to finish scenes. Instead the dialogue flows better and there is always another character to bounce a joke off. The lottery is a nice simple idea to play with and they do an adequate job with it. Phoebe calling Ross Daddy is pretty funny. Ross is the standout here, the penny pinching geek may not be what his character should be but he plays it with real style.

The Bad: The most famous episode of this kind is 301 and this episode does not compare favourably. The dialogue is not witty and the story doesn’t have any twists or turns. Most of the characters are shadows of the ones they played back then. Phoebe is egocentric and crude, Monica is selfish and annoying and Chandler is unsubtle and unfunny, a really sad decline.

Best Line: (P) “Ooh, is Daddy getting angry? Is Daddy gonna spank me?”
(Ro) “Well that depends, have you been a baaad girl…no I can’t.”

Best Friend: Ross
