Episode 17 - TOW The Memorial Service

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Ross and Chandler post stupid things about each other on their alumni website. When Chandler posts that Ross is dead, he decides to hold a memorial service to see who will turn up. Emma loves Joey’s teddy Hugsy so much that Rachel wants her to keep it. Meanwhile Phoebe enlists Monica to stop her from calling Mike.

The Good: Ross has his moments leading to the crazy memorial service and he and Chandler provide a few laughs.

The Bad: The writing in this episode is so poor and weak it is not a fun episode to watch at all. The Joey plot had no thought put into it. Emma likes Hugsy, so Joey takes him back. That is the entire story, without a hint of genuine characterisation or good humour. The same is true of Phoebe and Mike wanting to see each other again. There is no story or character development, Phoebe and Mike are not convincing in their affection for each other either. Monica makes a bad situation worse with her acting which is as subtle as a sledgehammer. But she is serviced with poor lines throughout. The Ross death story is at least an attempt at being creative. But it is out of character for Ross to be so insensitive to others and there is no subtlety again, just cheap jokes. Throughout the show every line is the most obvious, cheap, stupid joke that came to hand. Just a showcase of thoughtless, uncreative and poorly written ideas.

Best Line: (Cory) “Hi, I’m here for Ross Gellar’s memorial service.”
(C) “Cory? Cory Weston?”
(Co) “Yeah.”
(C) “You look amazing.”
(Co) “And you are?”
(C) “Chandler. Chandler Bing and I’m not gay, I’m not gay at all.”
(M) “You are married though.”
(C) “Don’t listen to him he’s in a really bad mood.”

Best Friend: Chandler
