Episode 20 - TOW The Soap Opera Party

20 January 2009

Synopsis: Joey tries to send the friends to a feminist play so that he can invite his soap opera friends round for a party. Rachel, who is developing feelings for Joey, finds out about the party and lets it slip to the others. Ross falls for a new palaeontology lecturer and Chandler ends up alone at the play.

The Good: There is a nice cohesion to the plots here as all the characters end up at the soap opera party. Joey deceiving everyone leads to some good jokes for him, especially flashing everyone. Rachel’s affection for him makes her more endearing and it makes sense that Monica tells her not to go for him. Chandler being left at the play is a really funny idea as well. Ross and Charlie are ok together and his insecurity is played out nicely.

The Bad: The usual gripes remain though. Rachel and Monica act like morons in front of the celebrities. Phoebe being anti-feminist is entirely out of her original character (see 216 for example). There is a lot of unsubtle and unimaginative writing but overall the focus and endeavour shown in the structure makes this an enjoyable episode.

Best Line: (Ra) “That’s why you got us tickets to that play, to get rid of us!”
(J) “Yeah.”
(Ra) “And last year is that why you sent us to that Medieval Times restaurant?”
(J) “Yeah.”
(Ra) “And the year before that when you set up that night time tour of that button factory?”
(J) “I can’t believe you guys went for that one!”

Best Friend: Rachel
