Episode 5 - Meet N Greet

6 March 2012

I wrote last week that Parks was feeling a little repetitious and this episode was an unfortunate exclamation point on that feeling. To be fair this was more predictable than repetitious but those feelings are in the same ballpark.

You knew Tom was going to embarrass Leslie. You knew she would forgive him. You knew Ben would eventually open up. You knew that Jerry was going to regret encouraging Chris to be open with his daughter.

That last story was the worst offender in that it was essentially just the same story as last episode with the exact same punch line. Chris is openly sleeping with Jerry's daughter and of course Jerry isn't happy about it. It was nice to see April do something nice for Jerry (by hiding Chris' car keys) but in general I remain less enamoured of the Chris Traegar character the longer he is on the show. I don't think the writers have defined him well enough when it comes to how he would approach personal relationships. You would think he would be bothered by making Jerry uncomfortable.

Leslie and Tom's story was as predictable and dull as Parks has ever been. We've seen Tom do this many times before. He uses an occasion meant for one thing as an opportunity to shamelessly plug his business. It wasn't fun to watch because unlike government business, Leslie's political career could genuinely be damaged by his antics. The fact that E720 is going out of business doesn't generate any sympathy from me because we knew he was flushing money down the toilet. When he began to make it up to Leslie you knew exactly where the episode was headed. It remains nice that the show is so committed to these happy endings for their characters' friendships but this was crying out for a change of pace. If Tom just comes back to the Parks Department then this storyline has been a waste of time.

I felt similarly about Andy and April constantly asking Ben to express his feelings. I was waiting for him to come out with something more important than just "you need to respect me." Was that it? Couldn't Ben have just gone to bed and talked to them about it the next day? I guess I didn't buy him just accepting the humiliation of Andy dragging him around the party in a headlock. I accept that it was a funny idea in theory it just didn't work for me.

Finally we have Ann Perkins, the least defined character on television. I have no interest in anything she does. The writers just seem to shove her into a story with whichever main character is left over.

This is the first sub-50 score I have given to an episode of Parks since the start of Season 3. A sad moment.

  • This was not a strong episode, it's beginning to feel like the show is running out of ideas, and why does Ann suddenly need to be liked by everybody? Her character along with Traeger's, were totally different the previous 2 seasons. They almost seem like they are headed for Office-like caricature territory.

This reminded me of the Greg Pikitis Halloween episode from season 2, and how much better that was – isn't a successful show (usually) supposed to get to know its characters better and improve as it goes along? I'm really starting to think that happened in season 2 and with how much it's changed there's not much left to do with where they are now at.

Go back and watch a season 2 ep. and it's amazing how much better the show was.

I'm still a Parks fan but my expectations are high based on how good it's been in the past.

  • As a general rule I still cannot stand Chris Traeger. Over the past couple years this has become my favorite show, but Chris is a glaring weak spot on it, in my opinion. I feel like his character had been defined well enough that he would basically dry hump the girl in the middle of the dance floor in front of all those people. And for all those times Ann Perkins was seen feeling insecure about their breakup...isn't this a situation where she finally would have reason to feel weird around him? He never acted like that with her...surely she'd feel less exciting or less sexy or something in seeing a completely different side of Chris come out with Jerry's daughter.

Loved April's wordless flip of Jerry's Mr. Potato Head smile into a frown, though.

For me probably a weaker episode but I would have rated it around a 50 or so. The Tom stuff would have been ultra frustrating to me except that Leslie was sensibly and understandably taking on that attitude for me. It's nice when characters acknowledge things as we would realistically...she was furious and calling him a selfish idiot, just like I feel I would have in such a situation.

Ben has shown a fear of confrontation on small levels, but I feel like there's a line where he'll stand up for himself and living space is one of them. It rang false to me that he'd be closed up about it ALL episode long. We've seen him care very much about the house being clean and he has come right out and confronted Andy and April about it. I did like the call back to Ben's Batman costume, though. Unfortunately his whole story this week felt contrived.

In spite of being less frustrated with the Leslie/Tom story because Leslie's reaction seemed right on...it did seem a little "we've been here before" by the end of it...having them hash it out and then Tom tries to make it up to Leslie. It was one of the first times I really felt like it was rehash or blatantly same technique used before.

Though it wasn't a hugely memorable note, I did like Ann following Ron around fixing things. For some reason it did seem like something she would want to do...especially after the episode of her wanting to interact with Ron & April more.

The best bits for me were the Mr. Potatohead frown, Ron wanting to fix everything in the house, and the return of Orin. Though I thought it would have been funny if he had dressed up as Chris for Halloween or something...as you're supposed to dress up as something you find scary, right?

Not a great episode, but I still think I enjoyed it more than Community and definitely more than The Office
