Episode 11 - The Comeback Kid

6 March 2012

The failed press conference was a pretty fun site gag as the whole team scrambled around on the ice. I also liked the overall story as it found a new plausible purpose for Ben and didn't pretend that Leslie could run everything on her own.

The build up to that was solid and a three legged dog was a brilliant choice to make Andy and April even more cute and silly. The writers once more used Jerry well as his success at getting a crowd to turn up was roundly condemned.

Ben feeling depressed was just about ok. I don't enjoy sit com stories about rational characters being totally unaware of their irrationalities. This didn't cross a line into nonsense though and Chris came across much better by being so sane and sure of himself.

I don't have a huge amount to say really, this was solid competent stuff. I laughed at Leslie's analogy that most murders aren't committed by assassins as an argument in favour of her inexperienced campaign team.

  • Not sure why this comment didn't come through, but I actually wrote and tried to post this before the comment seen below. Here goes:

"Man this episode was hilarious. Allison (my wife) typically doesn't get into the Thursday night comedies, but last night we were both laughing out loud during Parks and Rec...especially during the ice rink scene. Wow. Usually sight gags don't do it for me, but they set it up so brilliantly. Tom needing deluxe red carpet, the banner being blown up too big, the three legged dog, the stage being too small, the music repeating "Get on Your Feet" for a rousing intro. That was just an all around hilarious moment for Parks and Rec. I also laughed out loud with Ben's claymation video. When I was in a freshmen in high school, me and two friends tried making a claymation video. We stayed up til 4 in the morning and all we had to show for it was a similar 10 second clip.

Ben's depression didn't hit a sour note for me, because like you said...it never devolved into the level of crazy and irrational. I could buy that the hobbies he would invest in would be calzone making and claymation videos. Funny stuff. It's too bad they taped the episode earlier in the year, because in December there was a new Star Wars computer game that was released and that also seems the sort of thing Ben might sit around and play for hours with nothing to do."

  • Also when Pistol Pete falls on the ice, the cameras moves to Andy who is cracking up about it...those are the moments that make this show so solid. They just understand their characters so well...that is exactly how I would expect Andy to react to a guy crashing on the ice...so it made me laugh.

I've turned into a full on fanboy at this point haven't I?
