Episode 7 - My Bad Too
29 March 2012
Synopsis: Turk is about to reveal he has learnt Spanish to Carla when he realises the power that he has now that she doesn’t know he can understand her. JD wants to help a burn victim get to his high school graduation and Elliott helps out. Dr Cox steals Dr Kelso’s food to help him avoid gaining weight.
The Good: Scrubs has been pretty consistent with its character development this season. This episode features several examples of that.
Turk learning Spanish for Carla is a good story. Until they had Izzie he had no need to and his decision to was a sweet one (704). Here he realises naturally that knowing what Carla is saying gives him a huge advantage. Even without the influence of Kelso and Cox it makes sense that he might chose to hang on to this knowledge. The writers give her the excuse to forgive him and it wraps up their story in a happy way.
Meanwhile Dr Cox starts stealing Dr Kelso’s food to stop him overeating. Kelso’s gluttony was seen when he won free muffins for life (706), but we know the true source was his forced retirement (705). It’s the type of story which rewards viewers for paying attention and makes us care about Dr Kelso who clearly doesn’t want to leave Sacred Heart.
JD and Elliott work together to help Emre get to his graduation, which is a feel good story until the end (see The Bad). The conversation about relationships which they have towards the end is very good. They agree that their friendship goes on hold when one of them is in a relationship because they spend their time with their partner when they have one. It sounds true to real life experience and fits the characters.
Finally the Space Invaders scene with the interns is pretty creative. As silly as it is, it is orchestrated with such detail that if you have seen the game you will at least smile.
The Bad: The weird thing about Emre’s graduation is why on earth they didn’t give him a wheelchair. Turk and Carla’s unsubtitled Spanish conversation hints at a rebirth of JD and Elliot’s relationship. I hope they don’t throw the characters back into that as they have done such a thorough job of establishing why they are not a couple (115, 321, 407).
The Mexican day labourers joke is a bit stereotypical. Regardless of its political correctness, it isn’t very funny. It seems that the show shuffles its smaller characters in and out to try and keep the humour fresh. So here we get some silly jokes about Lloyd. But other than his air-drum driving what else do we know about him?
Comic Highlight: Turk tells the guys he has learnt Spanish for Carla. The Janitor interjects and says he cured Lady of her fear of the unknown for their anniversary. Dr Kelso says that women are like crows. They like shiny things they can wear in their ears, round their necks or in their nipples. The Janitor asks “Crows have nipples?”
Diagnosis: It’s a feel good episode of Scrubs as the main characters all resolve their disputes with a smile. It is not too annoying, nor is it really funny.
