Episode 1 - My Own Worst Enemy

29 March 2012

Synopsis: JD worries that he always sabotages himself and doesn’t want to do that with Kim. The reality is he just doesn’t love her. Elliott breaks up with Keith but doesn’t want him to hate her. Dr Cox, Dr Kelso and Turk all struggle to find out what is wrong with a patient that they all like.

The Good: Dr Kelso provides most of the jokes. Though the Janitor’s girlfriend being called Lady adds a moment of light relief in an otherwise barren episode for comedy.

The Bad: Two terrible plots with a third with nothing to it. JD worrying about whether he is sabotaging himself doesn’t seem to have much to do with Kim and in the end is just a way for him to fill time before the end of the show. His claim that he will stay with her despite not loving her is meant to be dramatic but is not. We have no reason to believe Kim will be in the story much longer. Last season she was written out of the show so that she wouldn’t interfere with normal JD stories (608). Here it’s pretty obvious they won’t have their main character living a lie for any length of time. In fact he said the same thing about staying with Elliot even though he didn’t love her back in season three (321) and that lasted a whole episode before he told her the truth.

Meanwhile Elliot is as unlikeable as possible as she breaks Keith’s heart and then whines that he isn’t being nice to her. That plot doesn’t go anywhere interesting and reminds us that we have still been given no reason to care about Keith. You could almost laugh at her trying to force him to laugh if she wasn’t being so inconsiderate.

Meanwhile Doctors Cox, Kelso and Turk fret over a friendly patient. Once again we are not given a reason to care about Joe, so the plot is just there, uninteresting but at least inoffensive. The “Whocaresies Awards” is a slow joke which isn’t funny.

Comic Highlight: Keith sarcastically asks “Can’t Pig-whore read?” to Elliot. Dr Kelso snorts and says “Ha! Pig-Whore read. See your last name’s Reid so it works both ways.”

Diagnosis: We already knew that JD didn’t love Kim. So we sit through this meandering episode to hear that again. The feeling that she will be gone soon anyway makes this feel especially pointless. No redeeming jokes are available so this remains an absolute stinker.
