The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is a comedy about two physicists Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper who live and work together in Pasadena, California. They live a comfortable geeky existence until attractive wannabe actress Penny moves in across the hall. CBS 2007-???

Episode 8 - The 43 Peculiarity

Synopsis: Penny is working with a new British guy in history class and Leonard is instantly jealous. He tries to warn him off of Penny but she catches him doing it. Meanwhile Raj and Howard become obsessed with a mysterious room where Sheldon goes every afternoon.

The Good: The Leonard and Penny story had a very pleasant conclusion which rather justified yet another story about Leonard’s inadequacy. It wasn’t just that she finally said I love you. It was also that he was able to admit the source of his jealousy (guys constantly hitting on her) in a way which made sense and then did the mature thing of admitting that it was all in his head and that it wasn’t her fault. It was a sweet ending with them both in tears and the odd line was funny (see Comic Highlight).

Of course the one fly in the ointment is Sheldon’s new assistant Alex who is now openly hitting on Leonard. I assume this will continue and present storyline issues. For now it was fine but I have slight worries about yet another Penny-Leonard break up plot.

Sheldon having a secret room was always going to be a fun bit of intrigue. The success of that story was always going to be about how much you enjoy Howard and Raj bantering. I liked a few moments like Raj pressing his face up to the door the wrong way or Howard shoving him in to test for booby traps. The ending was fun if very silly with Sheldon pretending to open a wormhole. I’m fine with him playing hacky sack to unwind.

The Bad: We didn’t really have enough to go on beyond 43. With a little more information the speculation could have been fun but instead was limited to fairly obvious jokes about Howard’s mum or calories.

Comic Highlight: Sheldon’s suggestion that Penny’s new friend could be a hypnotist performing secret sex acts was both surprisingly sleazy for him and amusingly surreal. A slightly better gag was probably the simplicity of Leonard asking Penny to text her new friend “Can’t talk right now, hanging with my boyfriend, England sucks, you suck, USA number one!”

In Conclusion: This was pleasant but no more.

  • I thought this was a pretty good episode.

The ILY scene was really well acted by Johnny and Kaley and the circumstances that led to it were believable

    Howard/Raj stuff was hilarious

So all in all a wonderful episode with just the core 5 characters(and Alex and Cole)

  • I liked the episode well enough; I particularly agree with your "Comic Highlights" assessment.

I still like Leonard. It's a shame his character - the one who challenged Penny's large ex-boyfriend Kurt (several times), who asked Penny out, dated several women, practically living with one - hasn't evolved much since Season One.

He'd be a much more appealing a character if he weren't so insecure. His relationship with Penny would be more interesting if we could see why (or even if) he cares for her and she for him.

Season Six Leonard needn't be perfect but he shouldn't be failing in the same old ways.

  • I'm with you Leonard and Penny have gone on pickering so long that it has gotten incredibly tedious, so I was surprised that I actually cared when she said she loves him. Leonard and Penny are not Ross and Rachel, who's will they/won't they dynamic went on too long but worked for a long time on the show. Leonard and Penny are better together but that's only because seeing them apart is the same story over and over again.
