Episode 5 - Dangerous Curves
29 March 2012
Synopsis: The Simpsons arrive at Kozy Kabins so that Homer and Marge can relive some old memories. We flashback to twenty years earlier and five years earlier where Homer and Marge visit the Kabins. Twenty years earlier they crash their bikes and are picked up by newlyweds Maud and Ned Flanders. Flanders keeps them apart at night and encourages Homer to ask Marge to marry him. Five years ago another road accident led them to a party where they have an argument and end up flirting with other guests. They both reluctantly end up at Kozy Kabins with their new friends and bump into each other. They swiftly hide their encounters (with Alberto and Sylvia) from each other and only in the present day are they revealed.
The Good: This is definitely an interesting plot even if the story is lifted from the movie Two for the Road. The multiple flashbacks keeps you interested in the story more than the usually predictable Simpsons fare. It’s interesting to see Maud Flanders back and she and Ned are an ideal excuse to keep Homer and Marge apart and provide some gentle humour. Ditto Alberto and Sylvia who play off Homer and Marge with very familiar but enjoyable flirtations (see Best Joke).
The reminiscences lead to some old fashioned Simpsons humour which is much appreciated. Bart and Lisa tickling Grandpa to try and find the cookies is a very simple and logical joke and of course his cry of “I don’t remember” is an amusing punch line. Bill and Marty’s (inane talk radio show) five hundred whacky sound effects is a nice bit of old style satire too. As is the sight of a park ranger about to call for help (when Homer is hanging from a tree) and being told off by his colleague who says (referring to the phone) “Uh uh, that’s for fires.”
The Bad: Homer and Marge love stories always end the same way. Not that I would suggest anything different but there is only so much enjoyment you can get after the hundredth story with the same ending and the same characters.
Best Joke: Alberto takes Marge up in his glider. His seduction moves very swiftly in amusing fashion. “Margery that party was beneath a woman of your elegance and sophistication, you…oh look! A budget motel.”
The Bottom Line: An enjoyable take on a very familiar tale.
