Episode 16 - Eeny Teeny Maya Moe

27 March 2012

Synopsis: Marge encourages Homer to spend more time with Maggie. When he discovers that Moe’s backs on to a playground he finds the perfect solution. Marge decides to secretly film Homer to see where he is taking her and is worried to discover Maggie is being bullied. Meanwhile Moe has met a woman over the internet. When they meet it turns out she is a little person. Moe falls in love with her but is preoccupied with her size. He asks her to marry him but loses her in the end.

The Good: The Moe story is about as straightforward and logical as they come. He is lonely and sleazy as usual and finds a woman who will love him despite that. Unfortunately he is preoccupied with her physical stature and that ruins their relationship. Moe isn’t unnecessarily stupid or rude and so it’s easy to sympathise with him and enjoy the story. The ending is pretty nice as Moe learns from Homer that if someone can love him then he will find another woman one day.

Along the way we get the little jokes you would expect (see Best Joke). Moe doesn’t want to offend Maya so he throws out his copy of “Little Women.” He also explains that he practised kissing by siphoning off other people’s gas and eloquently explains his feelings for her as “My heart wants to do her.” He also describes Homer and Marge in amusing fashion – “she’s a stand up dame and he’s a fall-down drunk.”

Dr Nick even pops up for a classic cameo when Moe wants surgery to make him into a little person: “Now close your eyes and when you wake up, you will be a woman!”

The Bad: I enjoyed the fact that the Maggie-Homer plot was linked to Moe’s story. It helps give the sense that time is passing for all the characters. However the Maggie story was no good. Homer’s love for his daughter is fine but it shouldn’t excuse his negligence so easily. I also don’t enjoy babies behaving like adults in this way. Homer is meant to be so heavy that normal people can barely lift him. When a baby drags him around it isn’t funny it’s just stupid.

Best Joke: The only joke which really went out there with Moe’s weirdness was this one. Maya says there is one thing which bothers her about him:
Mo: “Is it my religion? Coz I am a snake handler but not an observant one. If we have kids they just have to have a ceremony with a cobra by age three so that there grandfather will be happy.”
Ma: “No that’s fine.”

The Bottom Line: It’s a nice simple story, not too many laughs though.
