Episode 13 - Some Enchanted Evening

13 January 2010

Synopsis: Marge calls in to a radio station and lets her marital frustrations out. Dr Monroe recommends that she tell Homer to stop treating her like his mother. Homer hears the show at work and comes home apologetically with a plan to wine and dine her. A quick call to a baby sitting service and Homer and Marge head off for a night on the town. Unfortunately Miss Botz is a criminal who robs houses while babysitting.

The Good: The story is solid and finishes with a nice ironic twist as the parents return and free the criminal that their children had tied up. One or two gags work out fine such as Homer selecting a dead lobster from the tank or his stubble returning seconds after he shaved it off.

The Bad: Otherwise this is a predictable offering from The Simpsons. Lucille Botz is a typical cartoon villain; she is even drawn in exaggerated childish fashion. Bart and Lisa’s plan to foil her revolves around Maggie being able to untie them which is ridiculous. Yet another Homer is a bad husband story feels repetitious, though at least that isn’t dwelled on. Bart’s prank calls wear thin if you hear more than one at a time.

Best Joke: A nice gag for those who know their French.
H: “I made reservations at the Chez Paris.”
M: “Oh Homer it’s so expensive.”
H: “It matters not mon frère!”
(Frère means brother)

The Bottom Line: One more slide into childish cartoon territory. At this stage of The Simpsons evolution it is understandable.
