Episode 10 - Truth & Consequences
30 March 2012
Synopsis: Sylar helps Maya control her powers. He convinces her that she doesn’t need Alejandro anymore and then kills him. Bob brings Claire her father’s ashes as she struggles to deal with his death. Claire finds Elle following her and threatens to tell the world about what she can do. Mohinder uses Claire’s blood to cure Niki’s virus but on the way there he gets a call from Sylar who has reached his apartment. Peter and Adam go to visit Victoria Pratt who developed the deadly strain of the Shanti virus. Peter reads her mind to discover that the virus is in Odessa and then Adam frees her in order to kill her. Hiro learns about the creation of the virus and heads to Odessa to destroy it but he is confronted there by Peter.
The Good: With the end of the season in sight all the stories move quickly toward some final showdowns.
We get a pair of clever villains which is nice to see. Both Adam and Sylar manage to deceive the people they are with in clever ways. Adam maintains his plausibility in Peter’s eyes before cleverly setting Victoria free. It looks like he is being kind but of course he swiftly kills her to “protect” Peter. Similarly Sylar uses his mother’s death (121) to paint himself as a victim and further gain Maya’s trust. The image of Alejandro lying dead while he makes out with Maya is pretty creepy. Even the New Orleans thugs have credibility when they discover Monica and pull a gun on her swiftly and knock her out.
Claire’s threat to reveal her abilities to the world is a nice idea to give her back some power. It is a pretty logical way for her to avoid being stalked by the company.
The cliff hanger of Peter and Hiro squaring off is intriguing.
The Bad: As has been the case in the last few episodes there is some rash statements thrown around by people who should know better. Mohinder lays into Noah about his behaviour and defends the company. We can only assume that Noah has clued him in on what the company asked of him with regards Claire (117). Not to mention lots of other morally questionable acts which presumably he could have brought up. Yet Mohinder seem very naively supportive of Bob who has given plenty of reasons not to be completely trusted.
Claire seems pretty childish asking for her memories to be taken away to get over the pain of her father’s death. Her story is difficult to care too much about when we know Noah is alive and well. I did laugh at Bob telling Mohinder that the virus is in Odessa and that they are very vigilant with security. If you are so vigilant then why tell him where the virus is?
Although Sylar is clever in forcing Maya to try and control her powers, the fact that it happens so fast rather ruins it. Like Parkman’s new powers from the previous episode it seems the writers are rushing through developments far too quickly. Here Maya manages to control her powers on the first attempt. It is far too quick to have any significance and so weakens her story.
The Unknown: How did they cure Niki’s schizophrenia? What powers did Mr and Mrs Petrelli posses?
Best Moment: Sylar kills Alejandro just as Maya comes knocking on his door. He answers in a towel pretending he was having a shower. She says he was right about everything. He says he only wants to help her. They kiss as we pan to see Alejandro lying dead behind them. Creepy.
Epilogue: This is essentially the penultimate episode of this shortened season. Considering how plans must have changed the writers do a decent job setting up the final showdowns. Adam and Sylar both deceiving people feels a bit samey and lots of details are rushed through. However this makes you want to see what will happen next which is what it had to do.
