Monica is struggling to get over Richard and can’t sleep. Joey tries his best but he can not stand Janice. Rachel advises Ross to start sharing more with his male friends but then Chandler shares too much.
It’s half an hour until a benefit for the museum where Ross is making a speech. None of the friends are ready to go. Chandler and Joey have a silly argument about a chair and get humus on Phoebe’s dress. Meanwhile Monica panics that Richard might have tried to call her and Rachel can’t decide on an outfit.
Monica tries to get over Richard by making lots of jam and then thinks about having a baby on her own. Meanwhile Chandler comes to Ross for relationship advice about Janice and Phoebe starts to date her sister’s stalker.
Chandler decides to be committed to Janice but ends up scaring her off. Joey asks Phoebe to get him various auditions after she does a good job faking her way through a phone call. Ross tries to convince Ben to play with masculine toys.
Phoebe’s half brother Frank comes to stay with her. Chandler explains the list of five celebrities he and Janice are allowed to sleep with and Ross ends up meeting Isabella Rossellini who was on his list. Meanwhile Joey builds an entertainment unit for the guys’ apartment, but it is too big.
Janice asks if any of the friends have ever hooked up and we see what their lives were like three years before. Phoebe is sick of living with Monica and wants to leave. Chandler is looking for a new roommate and Ross discovers that Carol is a lesbian.
Monica buys a mattress from Janice’s ex-husband; the Mattress King. When the wrong mattress is delivered and she goes to complain, she discovers Janice cheating on Chandler. Rachel tries to get Ross to bond with her Dad. They finally connect but only when they criticise Rachel. Joey teaches a class on soap opera acting and gives bad advice to one of his students when they are in competition for a part.
Phoebe is reluctant to go to the dentist because every time she does someone dies. When she returns everyone is fine except “Ugly Naked Guy”. Ross leaves Ben with Rachel for the day and Monica accidentally bangs his head against the wall. Meanwhile Joey tells Chandler about Janice cheating on him and he confronts her.
Joey suggests a game of football while the Thanksgiving meal is cooking. This leads to the revival of old tensions between Ross and Monica. They captain the teams while Joey and Chandler fight over the attentions of a Dutch girl.
Depressed about his break-up with Janice, Chandler gets drunk at a party and kisses Joey’s sister. He can’t remember which one though. A stranger offers Rachel a job interview and Ross becomes jealous as he thinks the man is after something else.
Monica bumps into Richard and they end up spending the week together. Phoebe is dating a jock who keeps popping out of his shorts. Joey and Rachel swap books.
Chandler meets a girl with a prosthetic leg who used to date Joey. Ross insists on going to a fashion lecture with Rachel and then falls asleep. Meanwhile Phoebe’s ex-singing partner tries to get Phoebe to forgive her for leaving her.
Phoebe dates a diplomat who can’t speak English. His interpreter has to do all the talking so Phoebe gets Monica to come with her on a date to make things less awkward. Ross and Rachel fight over her needing to work all the time and she ends up suggesting they take a break. Meanwhile Chandler and Joey go out to a bar with the girl from the Xerox place who ends up kissing Ross.
Ross tries to stop Rachel finding out about his night with the Xerox girl. But she does and they end up having a very long conversation as they break up. Meanwhile the other friends get trapped in Monica’s room, trying not to let Ross and Rachel know that they can hear them.
The friends are torn between Ross and Rachel who both want to hang out with the group but avoid each other. The friends all hate the situation, particularly Chandler, as it reminds him of his parents divorce. He takes up smoking again. Rachel takes the friends on a ski trip but they run out of petrol on the way and have to call Ross for help.
Phoebe’s 18 year-old brother Frank announces his engagement to his home-economics teacher. Phoebe tries to break them up. Rachel lends Chandler a hypnosis tape to help him quit smoking, but the tape makes Chandler behave like a woman. Monica goes out with a customer from her restaurant (Peter) who turns out to be a millionaire.
Rachel gives Ross a box of his stuff back and then goes on a date with Mark. Joey starts work on a new play and starts falling for his co-star. Monica doesn’t find Pete attractive despite their dates going well.
Monica inherits her aunt’s dollhouse and won’t let Phoebe play with it. Chandler dates Rachel’s boss, tells her he will call and doesn’t. Rachel feels the brunt of Joanna’s desperation. Meanwhile Joey finally sleeps with Kate but she says it didn’t mean anything.
Ross gives up a chance to appear on TV to look after Rachel when she cracks a rib. Pete buys a restaurant and asks Monica to be the head chef. Joey buys a chick and Chandler buys a duck.
Joey’s play debuts and the reviews are awful. Rachel starts dating Tommy (Ben Stiller) who has a violent temper that only Ross sees. Meanwhile Phoebe is stuck on the phone waiting in a queue for over 24 hours.
Ross has a skin abnormality on his butt and no one knows what it is. Monica thinks that Pete is going to propose to her and wonders what it would be like to say yes. Phoebe is dating two guys and can’t choose between them.
Pete begins his career as an Ultimate Fighter and is brutally beaten. Phoebe sets up Ross with her bald friend Bonny. Rachel is unhappy when she discovers that Bonny now has hair. Chandler’s new boss keeps slapping him on the butt and it makes him uncomfortable.
Phoebe discovers her mother’s best friend lives on the coast and may know where her father lives. So she takes all the friends with her and Ross’ new girlfriend Bonny. Meanwhile Ross and Rachel begin flirting with one another and Chandler tries to convince Monica he could, in theory, be her boyfriend.
