Ross and Rachel wake up and realise they are married. Ross decides to not get an annulment because he doesn’t want a third failed marriage. Phoebe and Joey drive her taxi back to New York and he irritates her by falling asleep. Chandler and Monica realise they don’t want to get married but they do want to move in together.
Phoebe tries to convince Ross to get the annulment by asking women in Central Perk if they would date him now that he has three divorces. Monica and Chandler tell Rachel and Joey respectively that they will be moving in together and they have very different reactions.
Though denying it to Phoebe, Ross realises he is in love with Rachel again. As she needs somewhere to stay he asks her to be his roommate. Meanwhile Chandler and Monica argue over what to do with the guest bedroom and Joey interviews new girl roommates.
Joey tries to return a Porsche owner’s keys but likes the mistaken attention he gets. Rachel applies for an annulment but her anger ruins the proceedings. Meanwhile Phoebe baby-sits for the triplets and enlists Monica and Chandler to help.
Phoebe’s running embarrasses Rachel, Janine moves in with Joey and Chandler fears Monica’s wrath after he cleans the whole apartment and can’t put everything back where he found it.
Ross has his teeth whitened just before a date but leaves the gel on much longer than he was supposed to. Chandler warns Joey about Janine bringing too much girly stuff into his apartment. However Joey becomes quite attached to it all. Meanwhile a misunderstanding with Phoebe leads to Rachel’s boss believing that Rachel is sleeping with her boss, Ralph Lauren.
The Gellars come to thanksgiving dinner but Monica hasn’t told them she is living with Chandler. Meanwhile Ross and Joey try to get out of dinner as quick as possible to join Janine and her dancer friends.
Janine gets a job as a dancer on Dick Clark’s New Years show and asks Joey to go with her. Monica and Ross love the show and go along too. Meanwhile Phoebe and Rachel convince Chandler to help them find the presents which Monica has bought them for Christmas.
Rachel buys furniture from Pottery Barn but has to lie to Phoebe who hates mass produced furniture. Meanwhile Joey daces a dilemma as Janine doesn’t like Chandler and Monica.
Joey starts working at Central Perk to help pay the bills. Phoebe angers Monica and Rachel by claiming they are high maintenance and a push over respectively. And Chandler and Ross argue over who made up a joke.
Rachel’s sister Jill (Reese Witherspoon) comes to stay and follow in Rachel’s footsteps by making it on her own. Then she begins flirting with Ross. Monica is sick and tries to get Chandler to have sex with her. Gunther has to stop Joey giving free food to the female customers at Central Perk.
The friends muse about what life would be like if (deep breath): Ross was still married to Carol, Rachel had married Barrie, Monica was still fat, Chandler wrote comedy for a living, Joey didn’t get fired from Days of Our Lives and Phoebe had become a stock-broker.
Monica and Chandler sleep together and end up as a couple. Rachel doesn’t sleep with Joey because she gets too drunk. When she returns home she finds Barrie in bed with another woman. Ross and Carol have a threesome with Susan and he realises she is gay. Phoebe doesn’t know she has been fired and returns to work only to suffer another heart attack.
Ross tries to teach self defence philosophy to Phoebe and Rachel, Joey tries to make money through medical testing and Chandler and Monica forget to make each other Valentines Day gifts.
An old college friend of Chandler’s is directing a movie and Joey pushes him to get an audition. Ross begins to date one of his students. Phoebe and Rachel’s apartment catches fire and they have to go and stay with Monica and Joey respectively.
Ross worries that Elizabeth may cheat on him at Spring Break. Meanwhile Joey’s fridge breaks and he tries to convince the others to pay for it. Rachel asks if the others can find her a date but when both Phoebe, and Monica and Chandler bring a guy, things become competitive.
Joey is auditioning for a part in a show called Mac and CHEESE. Chandler doesn’t write down a message properly causing friction with Joey but he still gets the part. A clip-show with a more extensive plot than some clip-shows.
Joey’s job on Mac and CHEESE depends on him getting on with the man who invented and operates the robot. Ross meets Elizabeth’s father (Bruce Willis) and enlists the other friends to help talk him up. Rachel ends up dating him. Phoebe is writing a book and begins writing down everything Monica and Chandler say for inspiration.
Monica puts down Chandler’s name on a museum’s wedding waiting list. Paul tells Ross he can’t see Elizabeth anymore and Joey tries to get his picture put back on the wall of his dry cleaner.
Chandler and Phoebe go shopping for wedding rings and Ross and Joey think Chandler is angry with them. Meanwhile Rachel asks Paul to open up to her but regrets opening the floodgates.
Chandler shows the other friends the wedding ring and his plan to propose to Monica. The plan is ruined when Richard brings a date to the same restaurant. Ross considers if Elizabeth is too immature for him to have a future with. Rachel takes Phoebe and Joey to a charity auction and Joey mistakenly bids on a boat.
Chandler’s plan fails badly and Monica ends up at Richard’s place thinking things over. Meanwhile Rachel and Phoebe try to find backups in case they aren’t married by the time they are 40.
