Rachel leaves her own wedding and seeks out her high school friend Monica for help. Monica goes out on a date with Paul from the restaurant where she works. Meanwhile Ross is struggling to get over his divorce from his ex-wife who he didn’t know was a lesbian.
Ross discovers his ex-wife Carol is pregnant with his baby. He has to tell his parents who don’t yet know that he is divorced. He then has to go to the OB-GYN with Carol and her new partner Susan. Meanwhile Rachel has to return her engagement ring to her ex-fiancée Barry.
A series of errors by Phoebe’s bank lead to her finding a thumb in a can of soda. Monica starts to lose interest in her boyfriend but the other friends love him. Chandler takes up smoking again.
The guys take Ross to a hockey game to take his mind off the anniversary of the first time he slept with Carol. Meanwhile Rachel’s old friends appear and make her question her new life.
Joey recruits Monica to help him win an ex-girlfriend back. Chandler and Phoebe break up with their partners on the same night and Ross helps Rachel do her laundry for the first time.
New York suffers a black out. Chandler is trapped in an ATM vestibule with a model while the other friends congregate at Monica’s. Ross tries to ask out Rachel but a cat and its owner Paulo get in the way.
Ross and Monica’s Nana dies and all the friends go to the funeral. Meanwhile a woman from work thinks Chandler is gay and he soon discovers that she is not the only one.
Phoebe falls in love with David, a scientist, but then she learns that he is leaving for Russia. It’s New Years Eve and the guys all break their pact to not invite people to their party. Ross buys a monkey called Marcel and their relationship rapidly deteriorates.
Nora Bing, Chandler’s mother and best-selling erotic novel author comes to town. Ross kisses her when drunk forcing Chandler to confront her about her behaviour. Rachel is inspired to write her own erotic novel. Meanwhile Phoebe and Monica care for a guy they accidentally put into a coma.
Phoebe’s new boyfriend Roger is a psychiatrist and his insightful analysis of the friends makes them all hate him. Joey’s Dad comes to stay but Joey discovers he has been cheating on his mother for six years. Chandler accidentally sees Rachel’s boobs and she tries to get revenge by seeing him naked.
It is Valentines Day and Joey takes Chandler on a double date without knowing that the girl his date brought is Janice. Ross goes on his first date since his divorce and ends up at the same restaurant as Carol and Susan. The girls decide to have a “boyfriend bonfire” to cleanse themselves of bad relationships.
Chandler is offered a promotion so he quits his job because it is not what he really wants to do with his life. Ross dates a woman from work who wants him to talk dirty and Monica has a chance to become the chef at a new restaurant.
Joey starts dating Ursula, Phoebe’s twin sister. Phoebe fears that she might lose Joey because Ursula treats people so badly. Chandler has to fire a cute girl at work and instead asks her out. Ross is going to lamas’ classes and it begins to dawn on him that he will soon be a father.
Ursula dumps Joey and Phoebe decides to step in and try and help her friend. Rachel hurts her ankle and Monica takes her to the hospital. Rachel has no insurance and convinces Monica to give her information instead. The deception leads them to fight while they are on a date with two doctors (Noah Wyle and George Clooney). Ross worries about being a father until he has to take Marcel to the hospital.
Rachel is applying for jobs so she can stop being a waitress. She gets an interview for one in the fashion business but doesn’t get it. The girls learn how to play poker so that they can join the guys in their games.
Rachel and Barrie start sleeping together again before Rachel gets a call from Mindy. Chandler has a great first date but becomes increasingly insecure as the woman doesn’t call him back.
Monica’s credit card is stolen and she tracks down the woman who did it. Monica is so impressed with the thief’s attitude to life that she becomes her friend. Marcel has become sexually mature and Ross has to give him to a zoo.
Monica is dating a younger guy, Ethan, who turns out to be even younger than he said. Ross has a pager and is waiting for Carol to go into labour but keeps getting messages from a different number. Phoebe covers for Chandler’s assistant for a couple of weeks and discovers that no one in the office likes Chandler now that he is the boss. Rachel has sex dreams about the guys.
Carol gives birth to baby Ben as Ross and Susan argue over everything. Monica worries that she won’t ever have a baby; Joey helps another lady give birth while Rachel flirts with Carol’s doctor.
Ross goes to China for work and while away Chandler accidentally lets it slip that he is in love with Rachel. After thinking about it she decides to go to the airport to meet him when he returns and start something up. Meanwhile Joey is participating in a fertility study and can’t conduct any “personal experiments” during the study. But his new girlfriend wants to have sex and he ends up impressing her by being so giving.
