Episode 14 - The Banker

30 January 2010

Review

Synopsis: A potential buyer sends a banker to check the viability of the Scranton branch. Michael puts on a show to try and impress him and keep the branch in operation. Eric Ward spends most of his time talking to Toby to ascertain whether the branch has any outstanding liabilities. A clip show.

The Good: As far as clip shows go, this isn’t bad. The excuse to have the clips is pretty solid as Toby thinks about all the incidents he can’t mention. I would have liked it if the writing had spelt out more clearly the position Toby was in. I suppose he wants to keep his job and keep all his co-workers in business too and therefore is willing to lie about the liabilities. But considering he once dreamed of leaving Dunder Mifflin behind it would have been nice to clarify that. The same way that they nicely explained why there was a fake Stanley in place of the real one (to avoid anyone nearing retirement age being visible as a liability).

The Bad: I can only give clip shows a certain rating because it isn’t fresh material. Out of context many of the gags we saw are a lot less funny.

Comic Highlight: Michael introduces Eric Ward to his HR rep Toby Flenderson. As part of Michael’s plan to put on a front, it’s not actually Toby, its Dwight, grinning slyly.

That’s what I said: An enjoyable clip show.
