Review

Present: Sawyer goes in search of Desmond but only finds MIB and Ben. MIB follows Vincent's tracks to where Rose and Bernard have taken Desmond. MIB threatens to kill them unless Desmond comes with him. They meet up with Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer and they all head to the heart of the island together. MIB and Jack lower Desmond down into the light. He pulls out the cork which apparently caused the light to stay on. Once the light goes out the island begins to shake. MIB is suddenly human and he knocks out Jack and runs. Miles and Richard find Frank and head to Hydra Island where they meet Claire.

Flashback: Hurley takes Sayid along as he picks up Charlie for the concert. Hurley then pushes Sayid to break up a fight involving Boone and Shannon. Shannon and Sayid recognise one another and their former lives. Meanwhile Juliet comes to give Sun a sonogram and suddenly Jin and Sun remember their former lives. Desmond helps unload Christian's coffin and then takes Kate to the concert. While Jack and Juliet are needed at the hospital David and Claire sit with Desmond and Kate. Claire gives birth to Aaron with help from Kate and Charlie who now all remember their past lives. Desmond tells Eloise they plan to leave but he won't take Daniel with him.

The Good: The opening montage contrasting where the characters are in both worlds was a nice scene setting device.

The flashsideways scenes were in their own way delightful reconstructions of the events which had great emotional significance on the island. Sun and Jin remember their baby, Claire and Charlie do too and Sayid and Shannon get a surprising reunion. The most pleasing aspects for me were the small touches. Hurley's look of utter delight and affection for Charlie was spot on. Charlie's reaction to being woken by Charlotte was really funny, both for his childlike sleepiness and his instant hopeful horniness. And huge credit to Juliet who managed to slip effortlessly back into her role and play a pre-island version of herself. She really did play the two parts of her life so distinctly that you can spot it straight away. Post-Others Juliet was emotionally controlled with a hard edge, more often than not quite sarcastic and unmovable. Here she is immediately soft and caring and emotionally present. It was nice too to see Eloise' concern for Daniel, that would of course be her major concern. The flashsideways is giving him the life that she was forced to take from him in the real world. So even though she is aware that this isn't reality she can't bear to leave.

On island there were good moments too. I liked Kate shooting at MIB when she sees him. Why wouldn't she? I liked Jack admitting that he had learnt the lesson of trying to change reality. Now he accepts that this is the way it is and he has to live with it. He also admits that Locke was right about everything which is as close as we will get to the ending of the show which seemed most obvious for so long. It was a nice touch to have dead bodies surrounding the heart of the island, a reminder of the island's long history and the fate that awaits those who get close to its heart.

It was very appropriate for Lost that a big storm would be coming for the show's denouement and of course just for old times sake Desmond and co were seated at table 23.

The Bad: As nice as the little reunions were they aren't the direction I would ever have taken the show in. Is that a valid criticism? It is as much as I can say that those emotional moments happened in the past and for me aren't worthy of being re-celebrated. Or to put it another way, I believed that those births and love stories were part of an overall journey and not the be-all end-all for those characters. Their loving recreation isn't the focus of my interest in the show and I suspect many other viewers will agree.

Shannon and Sayid being reunited is an interesting choice. Sayid got over her and left the island and found Nadia again. It seems odd to jump him back to this previous love. It's not a bad moment in itself but it rather underlines the way Sayid's character did not get an adequate conclusion.

The Unknown: MIB suddenly becoming human once the light goes out is an interesting twist and makes sense. Now he can finally leave the island but would he still take evil with him? Or is that evil released because the light has gone out?

Desmond doesn't seem to know what the flashsideways is which is also interesting. It doesn't give the clear explanation we might have expected for his zen like behaviour on island. Now we don't really have a clear idea of what he has been thinking since he woke up.

Best Moment: Charlie waking up maybe.

The Bottom Line: Building nicely for the end.

  • Oh no, I did not like Sayid with Shannon at all! It makes sense that Shannon would be awakened by Sayid because he really believed in her, but Nadia is the person who really catalyzed his redemption. On the island, it was realizing that she wouldn't want him to kill to get her back that snapped him out of his zombie state. Besides, Shannon never really knew much about Sayid's past. Nadia did, and would still have him, were it not for what he felt about himself.

  • Re; Sayid and Shannon- at first I questioned it also but I think both of these characters were flawed yet accepted each other just as they were. Acceptance was what both needed most to move on and they provided it to each other.

  • It was great to see Sayid and Shannon hook up at the end. I personally really liked that relationship cause it was so daring. I've seen people complain that they were only together for a couple of weeks or whatever but on the show they did appear to be very much in love particularly in the Abandones episode and then the writers seemed to dismiss his affection for Shannon and stick him with Nadia who I like but I don;t think is as strong as Shannon for him. You have to take into accout the redemptive aspect of their time on the island and clearly the writers are saying here that Shannon and Sayid are meant to be not Nadia. It was the time on the island that shaped them the most. When Sayid got off the island he became an assasin. Mini rant from me there :)

I hope you give it a decent score I think it deserves it. Answers aren't really important after seeing the finale it was just really beautiful tv.

  • I found it incredibly moving which is really all I wanted from the finale.

One can complain about the lack of answers and that's entirely valid, but I feel like we have enough to fill in the blanks ourselves.

Vincent lying down next to a dying Jack was one of the more emotional things that I've seen on TV. It's been two days and I'm still kind of in a fog.

I'm rambling, but the one word I would use to describe the finale would be "beautiful".

    I already miss it.

  • KC -
I don't know...I didn't get the impression that Jack felt like a failure at the end. As he's lying down in the bamboo field he clearly smiles as the Ajira plane flies overhead. I'm pretty sure the stakes were too high at the very end to have an sort of ego about it. To me I felt like Jack would have felt a final sense of accomplishment in his last moments, knowing he "re-plugged" the island, had someone great for the job of protector in place (Hurley), and he sees his other friends fly off the island successfully.

  • Just a quick comment to add. This episode itself seemed split in two. It was happy ending/sentimental in the Sideways and too tragic on the island, esp. for Jack. Not so much because he died, but because he died still feeling like he was a failure, only at peace in the Sideways.

  • Hey guys, I won't get to review for a day or two and so won't podcast till the end of the week. Although I have split the episode in two, I will podcast as one episode. So your comments can be about the episode as a whole, you don't have to split them up into parts 1 and 2 unless you want to. Thanks for posting. It's 3am and I don't know what to think of the finale. I don't have major complaints on my mind but it was a far more sentimental ending than I could ever have imagined.,,

  • I am still sifting through my thoughts on the finale and will try to leave a voicemail at some point in the next few days. It would be helpful to know when you are recording the podcast so that we know when to get our thoughts in by.

I do want to say that I find your breaking of the finale into two parts to be a bit artificial. They filmed this as a single episode not as two parts. I firmly believe you should join the feedback and your review into a single response. Splitting the episode into two parts would almost make more sense if you were to do it based on the "on island" and "off island" stories more than just the first 75minutes and the second 75 minutes. Personally, there is no way I could divide my feelings about part1 or part2 in any kind of meaningful way that does not detract from my overall response to "The End" of Lost.

  • I really liked the look and feel of the episode. The commerical interruptions were tiresome and I am looking forward to watching my purchased copy later. I'll comment further if I can. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback. This is likely to be a polarizing episode because of the weight of the entire series riding on it. I think it'll be tough for you sorting it into stand alone reviews, so good luck, mate.

  • Can't sleep so I'll make some comments! First impressions about this episode: clever, unrealistic, far-fetched, gratifying, Long Con, bait and switch, happy ending, hokey, self-parody, phenonemon, rule-breaking, game-changing. It felt more like a stop in the story rather than a proper narrative end. What I liked the best: Kate stepping up as a character; the love stories, esp. Jack and Kate. What I liked the least? Still don't understand what is the Sideways world; didn't know whether or not to feel sad about Jack's death when it was happening! I'll have to watch it again and see how I feel.
