Episode 25 - TOA The Beach
17 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Phoebe discovers her mother’s best friend lives on the coast and may know where her father lives. So she takes all the friends with her and Ross’ new girlfriend Bonny. Meanwhile Ross and Rachel begin flirting with one another and Chandler tries to convince Monica he could, in theory, be her boyfriend. The Good: The Chandler and Monica interaction is just a fun side plot here, but it sows the seeds for the following season’s finale when they hook up. Now that is good planning. Phoebe’s story is a nice one as she discovers her real birth mother. Ross and Rachel are fun to watch as they flirt and interact with Bonny. There are lots of good visual jokes with the house being covered in sand and the games of strip poker to fill the show with humour throughout. The Bad: Phoebe comments that her Dad might be out buying her presents. Shouldn’t she be more concerned that he had made no attempt to contact her over the years? Joey makes an inappropriate comment toward the end, implying he would try it on with Bonny. This is something a friend just wouldn’t say. It’s a slip in the writing which implies Joey is a lot crasser than he has been presented as up to this point. It is a sign of declining standards. Otherwise this episode is fun and sets the stage nicely for season four. Best Line: (Ra – after painting Monica’s nails) “Ok, who’s next?” (Ro) “No. No way.” (Ra) “Come on, please. I’m bored. You let me do it once before.” (Ro) “Yeah well if that’s the rule this weekend…” Best Friend: Ross
