Episode 6 - TOO The Last Night
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Monica and Rachel and Joey and Chandler spend their last nights together before Chandler moves in with Monica. The Good: Ross making a fake Ben is one laugh. There are a couple of touching moments which hit the mark especially Chandler comforting Monica at the end of the show. The Bad: Otherwise this is awful writing. You would expect that Chandler and Joey saying goodbye would be funny but it isn’t. Chandler trying to lose money to Joey and him not realising it makes Joey look like a complete moron. It shreds the sentiment to pieces with its lack of reality. Then there is Monica and Rachel saying goodbye which should be an emotional moment. The writers try to make it funny by having them argue about the things they won’t miss about living together. This leads to Rachel in particular, saying some horrible things to Monica. Things which if a friend really said, could end the friendship. Her remarks about Chandler are especially damaging as they show a shocking lack of respect for Monica and a complete disregard for Rachel’s own friendship with him. Again these far too personal insults are not funny. They ruin the sentiment that comes later on by making these characters seem unlike people in real life. There is no adequate defence for writing as short sighted and poor as this. The title of the show is “Friends” but these characters act very far from it. Is it worth mentioning that Joey thinks Chandler is Chinese and Monica believes Rachel didn’t pack as a gift to her? Utter crap. Best Line: (Ro) “Oh but I can’t do it.” (M) “Why not?” (J) “Don’t you have Ben?” (Ro) “Because I have Ben!” (M) “It’s almost 8 o’clock, it’s almost past his bed time, where is he?” (C) “He’s at a dinner party.” (M) “Is he really coming because I can see into your apartment?” (Ro) “Of course he is. What you think I just use my son as an excuse, what kind of a father do you think I am?” (M) “Sorry.” (Ro) “I’ve gotta go make a fake Ben.” Best Friend: Chandler
