Episode 18 - TOW Hypnosis Tape
17 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Phoebe’s 18 year-old brother Frank announces his engagement to his home-economics teacher. Phoebe tries to break them up. Rachel lends Chandler a hypnosis tape to help him quit smoking, but the tape makes Chandler behave like a woman. Monica goes out with a customer from her restaurant (Peter) who turns out to be a millionaire. The Good: Pete is charming and Monica agreeing to go out with him is fine. Chandler gives us a few cheap laughs by behaving like a woman. It’s also good continuity that he is smoking after the last episode where he was so stressed. Phoebe doing the ‘right thing’ makes sense. Joey and Ross have a lovely scene with Frank, trying to talk him out of marriage, which is funny as well as sweet. Frank and Alice are a fun couple to watch and Frank in particular is ideal in his role as the innocent weirdo. The Bad: Though Frank and Alice do come across a little bit like a freak show. It feels like the producers don’t necessarily want to create a sweet couple to write stories for, but rather desire characters that they can create easy, cheap jokes for. Other than that though this is a very pleasant episode with a gentle feel and some nice humour mixed in Best Line: (P to J) “Your Frank’s best man?” (J) “I couldn’t help it, their love is so pure.” (P) “Well, what about you, huh?” (Ro) “I’m the ring bearer.” Best Friend: Phoebe
