Review
Synopsis: Monica and Chandler sleep together and end up as a couple. Rachel doesn’t sleep with Joey because she gets too drunk. When she returns home she finds Barrie in bed with another woman. Ross and Carol have a threesome with Susan and he realises she is gay. Phoebe doesn’t know she has been fired and returns to work only to suffer another heart attack. The Good: The scenes with the various couples are fun to see. Monica and Chandler are sweet together. While the scenes with Ross and Rachel remind you of what brought them together in the first place. There is more solid effort shown by the writers as Joey’s apartment from season two is recreated in all its glory. The conversation between Joey and Ross about the threesome is more subtle than you would expect and much better as a result. The overall message that the friendship and love between the group would have brought them all together in the end is a pleasant one. The Bad: It is less fun to see the conclusion to these stories than it was to see them being set up. That is a result of knowing roughly where they are all headed. Again Phoebe stinks up the show with her unlikeable behaviour and ludicrous plot. There is more fundamental misunderstanding of Chandler’s character. Back in season one when he suffered a career crisis he never mentioned wanting to write comedy. The writers have transposed what Chandler the comic creation became on top of what his character actually was. More than that though, during the early seasons Chandler was with a steady stream of women. Here it is implied that by giving up his boring job he would lose all his self confidence and ability to attract women. There is no reason that should be and it is an exaggeration of his insecurities to suggest that he would become this hopeless. Best Line: (Ra – looking at Joey’s “raining window pane”) “Oh wow! It’s like its raining.” (J) “Pretty cool huh? But if you’re thinking you could put a fish in there and it wouldn’t get sucked up into the mechanism, well you’d be wrong.” Best Friend: Rachel
