Episode 18 - TOW Joey's Award
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Joey is up for a Soapy award, Monica worries she will never be with another man now that she is getting married and Ross is taken in by a student who tells him he loves him. The Good: The plots here are not bad. On paper they are good ideas but in practise none of them is very funny or interesting. The Bad: Chandler not being scared by marriage is good in one way but they then immediately hint at his old insecurities without explaining exactly why or where his issues lie. It’s typical writing for the joke instead of for the character. The exact same problem exists in the scene with Phoebe talking about her mother’s advice; they just sell out peoples characters for the sake of the cheapest, worst jokes possible. The student being in love with Ross plot could have had a great twist or involved much better jokes, but instead it is pretty bland. Best Line: (Ra) “Oh my God you stole her award.” (J) “No no no, I’m accepting it on her behalf.” (Ra) “I don’t think you know what behalf means?” (J) “Sure I do. It’s a verb as in I be haf’n it.” Best Friend: Rachel
