Episode 13 - TOW Joey Speaks French
20 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Joey needs to speak some French for a play he wants to be in and so he enlists Phoebe to teach him. Rachel’s Dad has a heart attack and so Ross takes her to the hospital. Monica and Chandler take Erika around New York and ask her about the father of the baby. The Good: This is two-thirds of a decent episode. The Erika storyline is harmless enough and yields a couple of good jokes about whether or not the baby was sired by a killer. Meanwhile the Ross and Rachel story is very entertaining and does a good job of showing why the attraction between them won’t go away. The Bad: The Joey being unable to learn French story is probably the worst story in the history of television comedy. I am not exaggerating. It stretches believability until it snaps and ones intelligence is being insulted beyond reasonable measure. There is nothing in it bearing any resemblance to reality and it is just an awful, thoughtless, not funny idea. Joey is not deaf, he is not mentally deficient and his self confidence in his made up French is insulting to watch. It ruins what could have been a nice episode. Best Line: (M) “We don’t know that it’s him, it could be the football guy.” (C) “Honey, it’s us. Of course it’s the shovel-killer.” (M) “Alright, let’s say that it is him, would we not want the baby? No. Would we treat him any differently?” (C) “I’d keep an eye on him!” Best Friend: Ross
