Episode 2 - TOW Rachel's Book
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Phoebe moves in with Ross to give Monica and Chandler some space. Ross is angry that she massages clients in his apartment until an attractive girl shows up looking for a massage. Meanwhile Monica’s parents have spent her wedding money and Chandler doesn’t want to spend all his savings on it. Joey finds an erotic book which Rachel is reading and mocks her for it. The Good: Rachel’s book is a harmless story for those who like cheap jokes. Speaking of cheap jokes Ross massaging the old man, embarrassing himself in front of women at the coffee house and Phoebe interrupting his lecture are all good for a smile. Chandler and Monica’s story has a nice ending with them showing that they want the same things from their marriage. The Bad: However it takes silly arguments about weddings to get there. The argument could have been a serious scene except they had to throw in stupid jokes involving Phoebe where none were needed. The original characters of Phoebe and Ross would never behave like they do here. She is incredibly rude and inconsiderate and he is foolish and insanely inappropriate. I know it is a nice joke but massaging a stranger could have gotten him and her into serious trouble in real life. Also the writers show a very short memory with Rachel who handed the other friends her own erotic novel back in season one. I guess it took Joey six years to see the funny side of that? As usual any good the writers do is ruined by their own lack of patience and consistency. Best Line: (C) “Now do I get to look at this book or is it just for people who are actually involved in the wedding?” (M) “Of course you can look at it. Yeah, I want your opinion too. Here we go. What do you think about center-pieces.” (C) “Centerpieces.” (M) “Yeah. Roses or lilies?” (C) “Definitely roses…well I just think they are a little bit more weddingy…but lilies are the clear choice.” (M) “Oh my god! It’s like one mind.” (C) “Uh huh!” Best Friend: Chandler
