Episode 15 - TOW Ross and Rachel Take a Break
17 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: Phoebe dates a diplomat who can’t speak English. His interpreter has to do all the talking so Phoebe gets Monica to come with her on a date to make things less awkward. Ross and Rachel fight over her needing to work all the time and she ends up suggesting they take a break. Meanwhile Chandler and Joey go out to a bar with the girl from the Xerox place who ends up kissing Ross. The Good: The argument between Rachel and Ross is very convincing. He has been used to her being available and doesn’t see the big change her new job has brought. Ross is clearly in the wrong here but you can sympathise with his feelings. The interpreter is a fun character and leads to some nice jokes for Phoebe. Chandler and Joey have their moments too. The Bad: Chandler overacts some of his lines to the point where he is a cartoon character. The diplomat story doesn’t really go anywhere too interesting. The real problem here is that the fight between Ross and Rachel is so real that it makes it difficult to laugh at much else. In a way the whole middle of season three loses comedy value because of how well Ross and Rachel play their roles. There is definitely room for that story in a sit com but you need to find a way to keep the humour flowing. Best Line: (J – discussing a threesome) “How do we decide where we…you know each would…you know…be?” (C) “Right. Right, well you know, we could flip for it?” (J) “Yeah I guess but like what’s heads and what’s tails?” (C) “Well if you don’t know that then I don’t want to do this with you!” Best Friend: Ross
