Episode 18 - TOW Ross Dates a Student
19 January 2009
Review
Synopsis: An old college friend of Chandler’s is directing a movie and Joey pushes him to get an audition. Ross begins to date one of his students. Phoebe and Rachel’s apartment catches fire and they have to go and stay with Monica and Joey respectively. The Good: There is a really fast pace to this episode which helps keep things entertaining and enjoyable. The apartment story is the best part and has loads of good stuff to offer. From Rachel calling her phone and someone answering right to the end where Phoebe can’t stand living with Monica there is a purpose and a focus to the story. All the way through there are laughs to be had. Joey is funny as well; especially his memory jogger that Thursday is the third day. Ross is endearing and amusing in his affair with Elizabeth and she plays the sweet student well. An episode with humour sprinkled throughout like gentle rainfall: consistent and not forced with a nice clear focus on where the stories are going. The Bad: Chandler sounding forced and obvious in his conversations with his college friend. Subtlety would have served the purpose just as well. Best Line: (Fireman) “So uh you’re not going to be able to live here for a while. You ladies have a place to stay?” (Ra) “Wow, ok look pal, I am not in the mood to be hit on right now. But if you give me your number I will call you some other time.” (M) “Yes, they can stay with us.” (C) “So have you figured out what caused the fire, Mr Fireman?” (F) “Well uh, do either of you smoke.” (P) “Not usually but I could use one right now.” Best Friend: Ross
