Episode 6 - TOW Ross's Grant

20 January 2009

Review

Synopsis: Ross is up for an important grant and the man making the decision is Charlie’s ex-boyfriend. Chandler lands his first national television commercial but lies to Joey about not wanting to cast him in it. Mike asks Phoebe to throw out an old hideous painting she made and Monica and Rachel try to avoid receiving it.

The Good: I suppose Phoebe has a history of being oblivious to how good she is at things.

The Bad: Everything else. This is awful. Joey is frightened of ghosts. Sweet moral Phoebe of the first two seasons had sex with a whole band? Monica and Rachel being incredibly unsubtle and fake and Phoebe not realising it. Joey and Chandler having an incredibly dull argument as Chandler stupidly sticks to his lie. It is all so childish and badly written. But the Ross plot takes this to a new extreme. Greg Kinnear is actually good in his role which makes it even worse that he has to act the crap written for him. Worse even than his complete unrealistic unprofessionalism is the end of the story. Despite his appalling behaviour Charlie agrees to be with him again, right in front of Ross. Can you imagine someone being so heartless in real life? It is perhaps the worst humiliation ever inflicted on a once great character. It is a testament to Ross’ acting that he isn’t a complete joke at this point.

Best Line: (Benjamin) “Is there any chance you would take me back?”
(Charlie) “Maybe.”
(Ro) “Sweetie this conversation is starting to make me a little uncomfortable.”

Best Friend: Joey

  • David Schwimmer as Ross is at his sophisticated best here. Compare his portrayal in season 1 as a divorcee to this season. His character really evolves. Take the example of his hair(smile)which looks yuck and rachel rightly calls him "gellboy" and his pronouncing every single word and correcting "whom" every time someone says "who" even though "who" is accepted nowadays to replace "whom". He looks smart and sophisticated. Why should Monica and Rachel hide the fact that they don't like those pictures? Are they scared of Phoebe? Greg Kinnear is one of my favorite actors and Charlie looks like a slut especially when she introduces Ross to him for the first time in the restaurant and as you said, " Despite his appalling behaviour Charlie agrees to be with him again, right in front of Ross. Can you imagine someone being so heartless in real life?"
