Episode 3 - TOW Ross's Tan

Review
Synopsis: Monica and Phoebe try to cut out an old friend who calls them. Ross visits a tanning salon and Joey and Rachel go on their first proper date. The Good: Ross being tanned is quite funny but it is not the laugh riot some people think it is. They don’t really make much of it either. It is a nice touch that they bring up what it was like when Rachel first kissed Ross. I’m surprised the writers even remembered that. The Bad: There is so much annoying crap in this episode. Jennifer Coolidge is awful. She is a terrible idea for a character without a hint of subtlety. I assume the producers liked her so much they decided to cast her in Joey which is an indictment of their terrible judgement. Phoebe is a really bad friend and claims she was tortured. It’s such a pointless throw away line which erodes any sense that Phoebe is a real character. As for Joey and Rachel, well the writers obviously didn’t want them to get together and have them break up but this is just a cowardly way of avoiding the issue. I don’t know anyone in real life who has “failed” to have sex in this way. An unrealistic, poorly thought out, cheap episode. Best Line: (J) “I’m sorry this has never happened to me before. I’m an expert at taking off bras. I could do it with one hand. I could do it with my eyes closed. One time I just looked at one and it popped open!” Best Friend: Joey
